Walmart Parking /Law Suit

If you appreciate being able to park overnight at Wal-Mart, let them know! A lawsuit has been filed in Utah by a Florida couple who opened thier RV door to an intruder and claims Wal-Mart should be held responsible for their security in their parking lot. We all are aware there are risks we must assume when we boondock. This lawsuit will affect any retailer who allows us to park in their lot.

While the couple suffered an unfortunate situation, the retailer should not be held liable. Please join us in rallying behind Wal-Mart and other retailers who welcome RVers.

This family must be part of the legal system that has the mentality that if you think you can get a buck go for it. The attorney does it free and splits the ransom with the practioner of follishness. I had a person come to my door at 2:00am at the rest area on the WVA turnpike. I asked him want he wanted, through the closed door, he had a story as he placed his hand on the door latch to see if it was locked. Since there was a very small window open on the door just to get your hand out he could hear the unmistakable sound of a 45 cocked and loaded, he left before his story was finished. The last I saw of him was his backside running away in the backup camera.

My next message will be to Walmart to tell them "Thanks" for thier generousity to travelers such as us to just stop rest, shop, and be on our way.

We should all write Wal Mart and thank them for privilage of parking over nite. We use it a lot and try to leave it a better place by picking up after others. We always ask the manager or their rep first!!! This is part the reason the US is in such a pickle---sue happy people!!! Makes me sick!!!!!!!!!!!

WALMART LETS YOU PARK FOR FREE, WE USE THEM ALL THE TIME! ANY FOOL AT ANY PLACE, TRUCK STOP, CAMPGROUND, ROADSIDE REST AREA SHOULD HAVE THE COMMON SENSE TP PROTECT THEMSELVES, THAT'S WHAT MY SHOTGUN IS FOR! LOOK OUT YOUR WINDOW AND HAVE THEM SHOW A VALID ID, IF YOU ARE NOT SURE DIAL 211 ON YOUR CELL PHONE FOR 911 IN ANY STATE, IT WILL CONNECT YOU TO THE LOCAL 911!!!!

Although, we have yet to stay overnight at a Walmart's, it is always good to know that that is an option. I think anyone who opens their door to a stranger in a strange place is at fault. What if they had stopped at a rest area, would they sue the county? People need to be accountable for their own stupidity.

On the rare occasion that we park in a Walmart or any other merchant's lot, we always go in and ask if it's ok and also make purchases there.

We've never been refused but have been told of local ordinances which would cause us to be ticketed by the local police if we stayed overnight.

As former long haul truck drivers we know it isn't always wise to park just anywhere - even in store parking lots. There are places all over the country where you just aren't safe!

If we have any misgivings at all we simply go to a place we feel more comfortable.

One never opens a door if you don't know who's there - I don't care if you're in a house, apartment, hotel room etc!

Thanks Walmart and others who so generously allow us to spend the night!

one mentioned here about carrying a shot gun in his RV, sounds okay, but is it legal to do so? any permits or licences needed for a shot gun, not hand guns.

there are books out concerning gun laws and RV'ers, but it mainly concerns hand guns, no nemtion about shot guns.

anyone got any comments on this, thanks, you can e-mail me also , RCWilly@aol.com

That is a sad state of affairs. If you are a boxer you are told to protect yourself at all times. If you are in a motel/hotel room the door has a peep hole to see who is nocking on the other side. If you are in a campground you are supposed to look out the window that is present on the vast majority of doors to see who or what goes outside. I see no difference with Walmart or a rest area for that matter. " You must protect yourself at all times" With rest areas slowly fading away from the traveling picture,Walmart is one of the few areas where a sleepy driver can safely get off the road for a few hours.

I agree with most everyone one this blog. Walmart is a gracious hospitable, merchant. I have ask many times if I could stay in a Walmart lot overnight and have never been turned down. But I am considerate also. I don't treat it as though I am paying for a campsite, with slides out, grill out, etc. I do patronize their stores, as there is always something I need and to let them know that I do appreciate the fact that I can stay there, instead of hunting for a place to park when it is late at night. I try not to travel too late, but sometimes it is just necessary. And Walmart is usually there for us.
