Towing a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country
garykd replied to TOM41143's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
Hi Tom, The FMCA towing guides for 08, 09 and 10 do not list the T&C. This means it is not towable. However, all is not lost. REMCO has a product(s) that will work with the T&C. Go to http://www.remcotowing.com/vehicles/2894?m...7&year=2010 and read about their solution. Consider giving them a call and let them explain it to you. -
Hi luv2trav, Where are you located?

Towing a Manual Transmission

Hi Dave, What year is the Mazda? -
Hi Chris, For me, the answers are: 1. No. With the slides in, the coach is more cramped than a coach with no slides. The floor plan is made to live with the slides out and travel with the slides in. 2. No, I do not worry about this. Some coaches have an energy management system. This auto starts the generator when the batteries hit a certain voltage. This is adjustable by the owner. I do no have this. However, I know my batteries (4, 6 VDC for the coach). It is no problem for me to check the power panel and start the generator when it is needed. Lastly, the engine batteries are separate from the coach batteries. Some coaches (like mine) are wired so the engine will charge the coach batteries once the auto batteries (2, 12 VDC) are charged. This means I wold really need to be "lost in space" to have no way to charge the coach batteries. 3. I do not know of any class A coaches, being made today, that do not have slides.

Hi ISM500, Tetford toilets have a model name as well as the number. The number and function mentioned in your posts means it could be the Aria Classic or Deluxe. For the Classic, closing of the blade is powered by a spring. For the Deluxe, it looks like closing of the blade is controlled by a vacuum. The owner's manual can be downloaded by going to http://www.thetford.com/HOME/PARTS/Permane...63/Default.aspx and scrolling down to the bottom of the page. You'll need to determine which model you have and then work through the drawing and see which part is failing. Tetford's customer support is at 800-521-3032

Suggested Route and Parks
garykd replied to charfugate@hotmail.com's question in Destinations/Attractions
Hi ctfugate, From VA Beach avoiding the big cities is a longer route. However, it is the same route I would choose. I dislike I95 and the big cities. Consider the following: 1. I64 West to I81 North 2. I 81 North to I 88 East (Binghamton, NY) 3. I88 East to I87 North (Albany, NY) 4. I88 North to Keeseville, NY you are looking to get to Port Kent. Take the ferry from Port Kent to Burlington, VT. 5. I89 South to Montpelier, VT. look for Route 2 6. Route 2 to Newport, Maine 7. I95 to Bangor, Maine 8. Alt Route 1 to Ellsworth, Maine 9. Route 3 to Bar Harbor I'll be taking this route (from #3) this summer. -
Montana LLC for Kentucky Resident
garykd replied to LaWandaJo's topic in Laws and Legislative Action
Hi nlahni, Just paying the tax is not always the best/simplest or correct thing to do. I can only speak for Florida. The law is the law. If one can comply with the law why would one give $30K to the state? An example might be a coach sales price of $500K. The state wide sales tax is 6% of the sales price. Local counties and municipalities can add more. For this example the base sales tax would be $30K. If there are 1% adders, that makes the bill $35K. Florida is clear on the requirements to be exempt from this tax. If I can meet the requirements, then I will do it. If I am required to pay the tax, I'll change my residence to a state more competitive than Florida. This means Florida would lose a bunch more $s than the $s in this single transaction. Florida understands this. Florida remains competitive for my business as a citizen of Florida. The law allowing sales tax exemptions was written by and for those having multi million dollar yachts and airplanes. These people spend a whole lot of $s in Florida as citizens of Florida. Those who own RVs aren't even a rounding error on the topic of sales tax. Florida wants people who own these high dollar items as residents of the state. Other state legislators either to not care or do not recognize they need to remain competitive to keep those who can afford high dollars purchases as residents. Other states may also have a large percentage of captive citizens who can not move readily. Florida has a large percentage of people who can change their residence quickly and without much trouble. All this means the rules are different for each state. -
Montana LLC for Kentucky Resident
garykd replied to LaWandaJo's topic in Laws and Legislative Action
Montana considers a vehicle a commercial vehicle only if it is used to transport people or property for hire and weighs over 26,001 lbs. Therefore, if the coach (regardless of weight) is owned by a Montana LLC and does not transport people or property for hire, Montana does not consider the coach a commercial vehicle. With the reciprocity agreements in place for all 50 states, there should be no danger of being asked for a CDL if the coach is not used to transport people or property for hire. Since the state of registration (Montana) does not consider a coach (in this example) a commercial vehicle, there should be no problem with DOT regulations or fuel permits. Does this stop an overzealous officer from citing the owner, nope. However on these points the citizen should win the case. The title of this thread is correct. It is specific to Kentucky. The OP wants to know about things to do with Kentucky. Those posting advice for the OP to obtain advice from a Kentucky based attorney is valid. I have looked at many states DMV (for driver's licenses) web sites. They all read pretty much the same (word for word the same). I remember in the late 80s or early 90s there was a move to standardize all the states DMV rules. I think the question about being "caught" has more to do with storing the vehicle in state X when it is owned and titled to a Montana LLC. The Montana LLC is not the problem. Where one stores the vehicle or where it spends most of its' time, is the problem. Now comes the difficult part. Each state can have different rules for when a vehicle must be titled in their state. The OP needs to determine the rule for Kentucky. A quick check of the Kentucky DMV web site did not uncover what the Kentucky rule is. -

Hi Paul, I sent you a PM. -
Hi Wayne77590, I do not have side view cameras. I use my backup camera to provide the baseline for the outside mirror adjustments. The flat outside mirrors are adjusted so I can see what is approaching before it gets to the backup camera. As the approaching vehicle moves past the toad and the backup camera it is pickup by the convex mirror. The convex mirror holds the vehicle until I can see it with my peripheral vision (both sides). Both sides of my coach are covered from before a vehicle reaches the rear bumper of the toad to when it is parallel with the driver. Backing is the same. After previewing and visualizing the backing maneuver, I use the backup camera to watch directly behind the coach. I use the outside convex mirrors to align the coach parallel to the mental image guides (or concrete pad) that I am backing onto.

Hi gadget, I have not done this. However, I have investigated this as I plan to do it. Go to http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/produ...flat-pitch/7876 to see an example of what could work. If interested, you'll need to call and provide the height of the awning roller bar. There are several heights and lengths (in the store) available. If you do this, make sure you turn the auto retract feature off.

Hi Paul, Wouldn't the requirement to have a CDL be determined by the driver's state the license was issued in? An example might be a Montana coach tag with a Florida driver's license driving in Mass. I think Florida law would take precedent if Florida does not require a CDL to drive a vehicle owned by a LLC. It would be similar to driving a 26K + lbs coach in a state requiring a special license to drive such a vehicle. Florida has no such requirement. Therefore, the state (i.e., Texas) could not ticket a Florida driver with a regular driver's license for driving a coach in Texas. -
My coach is wired so the brake lights come on only when the service brake pedal is depressed. This is the way I want it.

Hi srfridley, The vintage of your coach says consider calling Fantastic Vent. Around the year of your coach, Fantastic Vent had a problem with their seal. I had the same problem as you have. They sent me a new seal and the glue to hold it on. I followed the instructions (use very little glue). The new seal did the same as the old seal. I fixed the problem by replacing the Fantastic Vent fans with Max Air fans. They are a better product. All the same features as the Fantastic Vent + one never gets rain in the coach,,,,never. Max Air is a much better design.

RV Campground in New York Finger Lakes Area
garykd replied to georgetownsteve@msn.com's topic in Campgrounds
Hi Steve, For something on a lake, consider: Cayuga Lake East Camp - 315-568-5163 It is a public park on the North East part of Cayuga Lake. There is 30 AMP service and dump station. Back in sites. 40' or longer will be a challenge. Warren W. Clute Memorial Park 607-535-4438 This is a public park at the South end of Seneca Lake. There are a few 50 AMP full hookup sites. Keuka Lake - 315-536-3666 This is a public park. The park is located on the North end of the West fork of Keuka Lake. 30 AMP service and dump station. There are numerous private CGs in the area, but none on one of the lakes. The above mentioned State Parks are the only ones I know of on one of the lakes. -
Highway 64 from Grand Canyon Village South Rim
garykd replied to akadeadeye's question in Destinations/Attractions
Hi Don, I have never taken route 69 to route 89. However, I would travel this road with my coach and toad. This is based on route 69 from Williams up to the Grand Canyon. There is nothing in the Mountain Directory to indicate any climbs or descents to be concerned with. -
Hi Paul, The Equinox and Terrain have the same towing comments in the 2010 FMCA towing guide. They must have the 6 speed auto tranny in order to be towed 4 down.
-
Hi gwjohnson, In addition to the suggestion in my previous post, consider giving your local dealer an hour's labor and have them remove the pin. I'm not sure when GM changed or why they changed, but our 02 Caddy and our 05 GMC ENVOY have no locking pins in the steering column.
-
Hi Mcgoo, You'll need t contact FMCA and verify what you purchased.
-
Hi Sue, Welcome to the FMCA forum. If you GOOGLE "rv rental Canada Vancouver" you'll see many choices for you to sort through. An email, with your requirements, should bring responses from those companies that can meet your needs.
-
Hi Harold, Welcome to the FMCA forum. I have had this product since 07. It works as advertised. I would make the same purchase again. We do not use it often, but where we have used it it works just fine.
-
Hi gwjohnson, Gut feel says the installer made an incorrect connection. There are too many possibilities to list here. Consider taking the coach back to where the installation was done. I have experienced the toad battery being drained, but not the other problem(s). I tow a GMC ENVOY. I do not need to pull any fuses. The ignition switch stayrs off. To keep the battery charged, consider this product: http://www.lslproducts.com/ToadChargePage.html. This is what I installed on my ENVOY and have had no additional battery problems.

Hydronic Heater Coolant Leak
garykd replied to severns@sprynet.com's topic in Systems and Appliances
Hi Shawn, These are a couple of cheap and easy things you can do. Is your expansion tank metal or plastic? If metal, check the expansion tank very carefully once the engine it up to operating temp. What you are looking for is a very small pin hole or seal crack. There may be a trail of coolant, or not. Also, replace the cooling system filler cap (formerly called radiator cap). Over time they can leak small amounts of coolant and leave no trace. -
Hi karenandcollins, You are missing nothing. Be prepared to spend a lot of energy getting the current one out and the new (firmer one) into the coach. Originally they put these things in place before the walls go up.
