    How do you know what the temp is if you don't have a gage? At what ambient temp?

    I DO have a gauge! It’s all in Silverleaf. Intake Air Temperature is one of dozens of performance stats that can be monitored. The ambient temperature at your location is easy to get via weather apps on the phone. 

    Do you know what your EGT (exhaust gas temp) is and what # boost are you pulling on the hills?

    I do not know the EGT (it’s one of the few things not reported in Silverleaf). However, I think the computer controls the throttle to prevent excess EGT temps. I’m pulling roughly 30 psi at WOT at 1800-2000 RPM.

    Based upon what I’ve read on the net plus additional information I received in some private emails, I’m convinced that my CAC is not doing it’s job. I’ve already ordered it, and the folks at Freightliner in Gaffney will install it in February.

    High intake air temperatures certainly WILL cause an overheat condition! When the intake air temperature is 160 degrees F the engine will run a lot hotter than if the intake air temperature is 60 degrees. All that heat has to go somewhere.

    Are you sure it’s actually getting hot, could it be a sensor issue providing bad data?

    How many PSI is the radiator cap?

    Good question…I don’t know. I’ll have to check on this. But this has nothing to do with high intake air temperatures.

    I would call Cummins with your engine serial number and see what PSI cap that engine is supposed to be equipped with. 
    our coach would climb to 215 and it had an 8psi cap on it, I swapped it for a 14 PSI CAP, never had an issue again and I’ve never gone above 200 since. Per Cummins our vintage ISL could handle up to 18 psi.

  3. I have a 2006 Mandalay 40E on the Freightliner XC-R chassis with the 400HP Cummins ISL and the side radiator. It has 134,000 miles on it.
     
    I’ve had ongoing issues with the engine overheating on grades, and I’ve spent thousands of dollars chasing it. I’ve done all the usual stuff; thermostat, the Source Engineering wax valve, confirming the cooling fan speeds, and even a new radiator.

    I am interested to know what your Intake Air Temperatures are. This information is available in the Silverleaf app, and may be available in other apps, too. I think the final item in my overheat chain may be the charge air cooler. I would like to know two things:
     
    • The intake air temperature under normal cruise on a level road
    • The difference between the intake air temperature and the ambient temperature
    I would also like to know the same temps when pulling a grade.
     
    I’ve been told that the Cummins spec on this is that the Intake Air Temp should never be higher than 43 degrees F above the ambient temperature. Mine runs a lot hotter than that.
     
    Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    The inverter has nothing to do with 12 volt power in the coach. An inverter takes 12 volts DC and produces 110 volts AC. And if the fridge is working, there is 12-volt power in the coach.

    That September 1 through May 1 chain requirement in Colorado only applies to I-70. If you avoid I-70, you don’t need to carry chains. 

    The I-70 crossing of the Rockies is the steepest and highest of the three interstates (70, 80 and 90) that cross those mountains.

    • The highest point on I-70 is approximately  12,000 feet.
    • The highest point on I-80 is approximately 8,000 feet.
    • The highest point on I-90 is only 6,000 feet.

  6. About a year ago I took a look at the 45AT. This floor plan has a sliding door between the living area and the bedroom. As I was looking at this coach, I decided to close that sliding door, just to see how it looked. When the top of the sliding door touched the opposing wall, there was a 1-inch gap between the door and the wall at the bottom of the door!

    I slid the door back open, exited the coach, and scratched this model off my list. If it’s that far out of square, I’m not interested.


  7. The National Truck Maintenance Council has determined that a typical truck radiator loses 1% of its cooling capacity every year, even with perfect maintenance. Flushing it will not restore the lost capacity. You could be down 17% in cooling capacity in the radiator. It may be time for a new one.

    You should plan to take I-240 around the south side of Memphis and cross the river on I-55. The I-40 bridge is closed...for a long time. They found a crack in it a few days ago.

    I understand this is an old thread.

    Has anything changed here since 2009? I would also like to change my Display Name, but I want to use the same email address as I use on this account.

    We should be able to request a display name change and get it done at the admin level. I can understand why you don’t want members to be able to change their own display name, but I hope that admins can do it.

    If you cannot change my display name, please delete my account and send me an email to let me know you’ve done that. Then I’ll re-register with a new Display Name.

  10. I just replaced 10 year old Michelin drive tires with a set of 4 Yokohama’s. Went up one size, from 275/75R 22.5 to 295/80R 22.5. Also went from 14 ply to 16 ply, which means I can drop the pressure about 10 psi from 95 to 85. So far I’m very happy with the new tires.

    I’m sorry,  but that’s just nuts! Why in the world would you ever do that? And, as manholt said, it’s an unenforceable law with no teeth.

    Those files represent a treasure trove of valuable information for a new owner...no matter how the vehicle is sold. I liken it to an aircraft log book. I have a three-ring binder that contains every service invoice that has been written on my coach...from day one. I also use a custom software program I wrote that contains every maintenance record and every trip record...also from day one. All of this will go to the new owner when we ultimately sell the coach.
