  1. Thank you all for your input. It has just been recently that I have left the grey water valve open and have been getting that smell, so from now on I will ensure it is closed except for emptying. The more we travel and live in the motorhome the more we learn. Appreciate the help. Mike...
  2. I have a 2008 Jayco Melbourne, class C motorhome. All is great with this home except that a few days ago we began to get a funky chemical-like smell. It appears to maybe come from the bathroom but is really hard to pin down. We also thought that it may be coming from our older memory foam topper on the bed. It is not overpowering but lingers. It is more pronounced in the rear of the home. We have looked everywhere, cleaned everywhere and it still permeates the home. Any ideas? We have a black tank washer and each time I empty the black water I always rinse it well until the water runs clear for a time. The grey water is allowed to run freely so doesn't get filled up, although periodically I close the valve and let it fill some so as to ensure that it remains clean.
  3. I tried the Lifeline series 6 volt AGM batteries but they would not fit in my battery tray and they don't make any of the size that do. I ended up buying flooded Interstate deep cycle batteries, 2 12 volt that I rigged in parallel so I should now have the power when I need it as well as a longer life of the batteries when boondocking. Thanks for all of your support folks this sort of response is very helpful for a near novice in motor homing. Mike...
  4. I finally got the door open by virtually destroying the latch mechanism, ordered the replacement on line from PPL in Texas and it is now back to normal. Mike...
  5. We came back to the RV and the door would not open. The latch seemed to pull properly but the pin did not pull out of the door frame. We got into the coach by way of the front door. I was able to get the inside cover on the latch off and discovered that the pin that slides into the door frame to hold the door closed was broken and I was not able to pull out the broken part. I did, however take off the moulding on the latch side of the door and move the latch into the door. There does not appear to be anything holding the door but I still cannot open it. I could not pull the outside cover off of the door or get the full latch out. It is, of course, screwed to the door. I can't see anything holding the door in place yet I still cannot open it. Any suggestions? We can enter and exit the coach from the front so that is not really a problem but we really would like to get the door working again. Mike...
  6. Thanks all. I will give the cleanup and checkup of the wires another try. It stayed open the other day when it was raining but only for awhile and then came back in again on its own. Very strange. Mike...
  7. There are a string of speakers that run down the middle of the ceiling in the motor home and there are also two in the bedroom. When the radio in the cab is on, these speakers are in use and controlled by the radio (fading) in the dashboard of the cab. There are also three speakers along the ceiling above the TV in the living room and two more in the couch slide. These speakers never come on and I don't know to what radio or TV they are connected. Any ideas?? There is so much to these RVs that are foreign to me that I am finding a lot that I don't know about. Thanks to those of you who have been doing this for years for your help. Mike...
  8. We have a dual type water heater and both electric and AV gas heats the water properly. However, when we turn on the hot water tap it comes in hot but then goes cold. Then when we turn off the tap and then turn it on again the water is again hot for a short time before it runs cold. Any suggestions?? Mike...
  9. How do I do that? Should I disconnect the one on the door?
  10. Thanks. Now, where would I put the switch in the system to operate the steps with the toggle switch. Our last coach we had to open and close the steps by hand so this seems like it would be a good way to solve the problem without spending an arm and a leg to get it done. Mike...
  11. An added little turn of events to my steps on the motorhome. Two days ago I opened the door and the steps stayed down. I thought that they were fixed. I had gone under and checked the fuse, all the wires and there didn't appear to be any loose wires. So, for the morning the steps were down when the switch was turned off. Then while we were out, they came up again. Today the same thing. When I opened the door this morning the steps came down and stayed down. Fixed. wrong. We were eating lunch in the motorhome and all of a sudden the steps came back in on their own. Now they go down when the door is opened and come back up when the door is closed. Very strange... Mike...
  12. The Electric steps are Kwikee #888 two steps on a Jayco motorhome according to the manual. Mike...
  13. In my 2008 Jayco Melbourne 29D we have double electric steps that come out when the door to the coach is opened. There is a switch that one can turn off when you are parked so that they stay down when the door is closed. We have been parked on a campsite for a couple of weeks now with the switch turned off (so the stairs stay out). All of a sudden when the door is shut the steps retract. Has anyone experienced this problem and how did you resolve it. Thanks Mike...
  14. Thanks guys I will look at all of that as well when I do my annual look for any cracks and other possible trouble spots. I appreciate the input from you all. Mike...
  15. Rich, I got the eternabond tape and followed the directions on the tape. It was easy to install as long as I was careful to make sure that the length was right and that I didn't stick it down until I was ready. I am happy with the results and if that was where the water was coming in, I am sure that there is no possiblitiy for it to come in there anymore. That stuff is amazing. Thanks again Mike...
  16. Thanks Rich, I will give it a try. I appreciate your help and will let you know how it turned out. Mike...
  17. Thanks Rich, I have already looked carefully around all three slides and the rubber seals look really good. The tape across the top of the rear slide is wavy and appears to be worn so that is where I thought that the water may have come in. I checked the other slides and they seem OK. I figured that there were a couple of things that I could do. First, get some tape and reseal the seam. The second and probably a better way to deal with it is to run a bead of caulking along the seam to reseal the area where the tape is. The thought regarding the tape is that if Jayco built the slides and put tape along the screw line then why not emulate them. Mike...
  18. Good for you. We have a 2008 and absolutely love it. It is big enough and a real treat to drive. We tow a 2006 Jeep Liberty and it tows along without any difficulty. We think that the slides and the room they provide are wonderful and when en route we can stop at rest stops and make our lunches without any trouble since there is lots of room to move around even when the slides are closed. All in all we are very happy with our home, although we could use some levelers. I currently crawl under and put jack stands under the front and back to help the stability when parked. We have not gotten a case of two foot itis yet and find it very comfortable for the two of us. The length took a bit of getting used to when driving around gas stations but even that is not too bad considering the size. Happy RVing and enjoy the home.
  19. I have a 2008 Jayco Melbourne 29D motorhome and while we were driving from Ontario to Florida we had some water leakage in the bedroom slide. I had slide transit bars in the front two slides but not in the bedroom slide. I had a lot of snow on the top of the motorhome when I left and it slowly melted and fell off along the way although the last of it only came off in NC on the third day. We also drove through a lot of snow both on the road and falling from the sky and I wonder if that may have leaked in some way. The seal on the slide looks OK but there is tape across the top of the slide along the edge where it was sealed when built. That tape appears a bit worn and wavy. Can I buy some duck tape and retape the seam or should I get some other type of tape to ensure that the seam is well sealed? We have had the motorhome for over a year now and have gone through some very wet weather but this is the first time we have had any water in the bedroom around the bottom of the slide. Any suggestions??
  20. Just a note to let everyone know what I did. I contacted Jayco and told them of my dilemma. OK, it wasn't really a dilemma but a missing screw cover was a pain for us even if nobody else could see it. I asked them to send me a couple of covers, one to replace the missing one and a spare. At first they suggested that I go to a Jayco dealer and get it from them. When I tried a couple of dealers in Florida, they were reluctant to order the covers since it was such a minor thing. One suggested that they could order the covers but the shipping would cost more than the covers. I contacted Jayco, told them what the dealers had said and within a few days they sent the covers to me at no charge. In fact, they sent them to the resort at which I was staying in Florida (The Glades) via UPS. Since I had moved on by the time that they arrived, the Glades were good enough to Fedex them to me in South Carolina again at no charge. I just want to complement both Jayco and The Glades for their excellent service support. In my mind, if Jayco will take the time to handle a very minor annoyance like our missing screw cover, then I have no doubt that their support to a larger problem will be as good. There is no guarantee that we will ever be back to The Glades RV Resort in Moore Haven, FL but still they took the time and expense of Fedexing the covers to me. Kudos to them.
  21. The awning on my Motorhome covers the front slide so that there is no slide awning. However, in order to open the awning I must first close the slide since the opening handle (the one to extend the awning) is on the inside and comes up against the slide. When I try to pass the slide, the handle must be closed, and with the handle in the arm is locked. Both arms on the awning have the handles on the inside but only the front handle is a problem since there is no obstruction from the back of the coach. My question to the members is this, can I swap arms front to back so that when I open the awning the handle will be on the outside of the arm and hence not come in contact with the slide? It appears that the awning arms are attached to the awning with a single screw through the housing on the top of the arm and the arms themselves are held to the motorhome by two screws at the top. It appears that swapping the arms front to back would clear up this issue. What is your view? As a newby in motorhomes I am reluctant to do any mods that even if they look like they would work may cause me more grief than they are worth.
  22. We recently bought a 2008 Jayco Melbourne 29D and after we got it home and were putting things away we noticed that one of the screw covers on the dinette was missing. I contacted Jayco and they told me to contact a Jayco dealer to get the cover. I contacted two dealers in southern Florida. One told me that I should go directly to Jayco and the other didn't even respond to my request. Does anyone know where I can get a screw cover for the dinette. I re-contacted Jayco with the response from their dealers but have heard nothing from them. We love this motor home and a missing screw cover is not a big deal but I find it somewhat like walking with a stone in your shoe, you are the only one that knows that you have it but it irritates you all the same. Thanks...
  23. Thanks. I do the same for leveling the RV but my concern was really the stability of the unit when parked. I thought that the levelers would keep it from moving when people walk around or go from one side to the other. I currently have placed a couple of screw jacks under the rear frame but I just thought that there could be some other way to make the coach more stable when parked. In our former travel trailer we had crank down jacks on each of the corners and that kept it stable when parked.
  24. | have no levelers on my Jayco Melbourne. Should I get HWH levelers installed or is there some other way that is better to ensure level and stable parking. Any advice would be appreciated.
