I had this problem. Manual said to spray closer flap with silicone periodically. I do this and have no recurrence of flap staying open.

Towing 2009 Ford Escape

We tow a 2008 Lincoln MKX and have about 3,500 miles on it with no problems to date. We travel 60-65 mph and always run motor in neutral for 5 minutes at every rest or gas stop. We also follow advice from our previous Honda CRX and never go to neutral from reverse. We have Blue Ox Base plate & tow bar plus US Gear Braking system. Terry Vancouver, Canada
