  1. Does anyone know if a 2005 Chevy Colorado can be towed four down (automatic transmission and two wheel drive)?
  2. Can anyone tell me what has to be done in order to tow my 2005 Sierra Denali? I believe a transmission pump is necessary. What is the best kind to purchase and how hard are they to install? Thank you, Brad
  3. We have a 2015 Cherokee Latitude with the V6 and Active Drive II 4x4 transmission, Blue Ox tow bar and base plate and the Roadmaster Even Brake system. Problem, after towing the car from Chicago to Texas, it would not recognize the keyless entry fobs. None of the remote functions would work from the fobs. Took it to the nearest dealer, it took them a week to get the right parts. They replaced some modules, a network module and a brake module, I think. All under warranty. Just finished towing it across Texas and it is doing it again! Same problem. Question, since the vehicle computers are never really “off”, could the application of the brakes with the Even Brake system while towing cause the computes to “wake up” and then get really confused because the wheels are turning and the engine is off? Will be taking it to the nearest dealer in the morning, again!
  4. We recently purchased a Smart 4 Two to pull behind our Chinook Glacier motor home and was wondering if anyone has first-hand knowledge or information about the Pod-ium Smart trailer manufactured by Pod-ium in Quebec (pod-ium.com). It looks exactly like what I'm looking for, but I wanted some additional information, observations and comments from 'real-world' users before I commit to buying something like this 'sight unseen'.
  5. I know the Subaru Outback does not have a manual transmission option for the 2015 model year and that Subaru says you can tow manual transmission Subarus 4 wheels down. I also know that they now have a CVT (automatic transmission) with manual mode so was wondering if it is possible to tow a 2015 Outback with the CVT in manual mode?
  6. Has anyone towed a Smart Car four down ? 2009 Passion Cabriolet for Two.
  7. I have a 1997 Toyota 4runner and would love to tow it 4 on the floor. Can it be modified even though it is a automatic and it is a 4wd.
  8. I just want to give some KUDOS to Blue Ox and one of their dealers. I bought a motorhome recently and it came with a Blue Ox tow bar and much of the associated parts. I only needed a base plate and wiring kit for my 2009 Scion xB. I looked it up the installation on line and saw that it was not a simple bolt on for my car as it required removal of the front fascia and some cutting with a power saw, so I quickly decided it was a job for the professionals. I contacted Blue Ox by email and they referred me to their dealer in my area (Hitch and Weld of Naples, Naples FL). They are also the only dealer in the area without going to the East coast or up to Ft. Meyers so I was a little leery I was just getting a name. I also bought my base plate and wiring kit at the recent Tampa RV show from the Blue Ox exhibitor booth--it was discounted and included free shipping to my home. I was wondering if the local dealer wasn't going to be too happy I was bringing my own parts. Needless to say they were very pleasant to work with and very professional. Hitch and Weld of Naples is a Man, wife and son business that has been around a long time. Not only is the installation job very professional looking it was much cheaper than the quotes I got from some places in the Tampa area (almost 50% less in one instance) and it is the labor charges. The owner dealt with me and he was very helpful telling me to call him any time if I have any questions. So, if you are in south FL or close enough you want to see Naples or lay on the beach when you are having some work done, I think you will find the drive for your anything towing, trailer or hitch needs well worth the drive. If you live near here, this is a good company to do business with!
  9. We are shopping for Luxury Certified Used cars that can be towed 4 down. Last year we towed a Toyota Avalon on a dolly. Want to go 4 down for convenience. Any hints from people towing a Buick LaCrosse or Lincoln MKS would be helpful. We would like to find a 2010 coming off program to buy this summer. Any problems towing one of these cars?
  10. I have been reading posts for days. I've found many answers (some old, some new) of people trying all different methods of disconnecting the battery on the Ford Focus Toad. My question is for those of you that decided to disconnect the positive terminal (because it much easier to get at, and needed for a braking system anyway) instead of the negative terminal. If you have been running your 2012-14 Focus Auto Trans Toad with the positive disconnected, have you experience any troubles? How many miles have you towed your toad with the positive battery cable disconnected? Thank you.
  11. I have read that people tow Mazda Miatas with manual transmissions. Is it possible to tow one four on the road with the 6 speed automatic sport tranny? I really need to know as I am shopping for a tow car. The one I want to tow is a 2008. It seems that all the copper-red Miatas come with this auto trannys. Help, I love that color but want to use it as my toad. Also am wondering why there were no Miatas in the 2008 list of towables. I am a newbie and am depending on some good advice from more experienced RVers.
  12. I am searching for a new towable and the Honda Element seems to fit my needs. However, Honda says the only vehicle they certify as towable is the CRV. I have noticed several people towing Elements and even one person I talked with was towing a Honda Pilot. All I spoke with said they used the same procedure as spelled out in the CRV manual to allow them to tow the Element and the Pilot. Does anyone out there have any experience with towing any of these Honda models?
  13. Will the battery in the new Ford F150 4X4 go dead while in the new towing mode. The towing mode feature is new for 2014, I guess. To put into towing mode you must turn on the ignition and put on brake, put trans in natural and then turn the 4X4 switch back and forth between 4x2 to 4x4L 5 times in six seconds and the dash goes blank and it says "in towing mode" It doesn't say anything about the condition about the battery when you arrive at your destination. I called Ford and got a busy signal most of the day. I called the dealer and all service said was that if the battery goes below a certain voltage it will go into "battery safe mode" so it will start when called for ? There must be somebody out there with the same question. Thanks. Don Fleming Eagle, Id.
  14. 2013 was our first year in Class A pulling toad. We occasionally had difficulty getting both sides of our blue ox aventa tow bar to "lock.". At first, we were hooking all up, then pulling MH forward with DW standing by toad to make sure ( signal to DH) when both sides locked. One especially difficult day, another long- time Class A RV person in a campground, came to help us newbies. He said hook up, but use Reverse and BACK toad up to get both sides tow bar to lock (noting easier to turn toad slightly while backing up if tow bar sides are not equal, so not locking simultaneously). We continued the "back toad" process. Worked great until we had to change toads. We had a FWD toad last time. New toad is 2014 Jeep GC Overland, and we would like to know from others who already tow a 2013-14 GC, what steps do you use to lock - in both sides of your tow bar? ( i.e, do you hook up to tow bar, then put in reverse to get both sides tow bar "locked" BEFORE you do the steps in Jeep owners manual to set transmission and drive train to Neutral, etc.). The O manual says to do all the steps to Neutral for tow, THEN hook up tow bar. We need some first- hand advice -- thanks!
  15. I would like to know the pros and cons of towing our Toyota Camry behind our Allergro Bay as to driving it separately. Thanks. Carol
  16. Want to tow a Class-B ('04 Roadtrek /Chevy 3500). What are any/all the best recommended mod's req'd: ie: 1. Drivetrain Disconnect vs. Lube Pump 2. Electrical connections/disconnects 3. Best Tow System & Aux Brake 4. Any Other "Experience" recommendations Any specific recommendations/references, ASAP, would be greatly Appreciated!! Thanks, Don
  17. After a trip across the county towing my car on a dolly I'm looking to find a dinghy I can tow with 4 wheels on the road. The dolly takes up too much time and space. I'm looking at the Chevy Equinox Crossover and wonder if anyone has any information on towing them. As per usual the manufacturer is reluctant to tell me anything. I would consider other makes/models if they are recommended.
  18. This may be helpful to others considering tow vehicles. I recently purchased a 2013 Hyundai Accent with manual transmission for the express purpose of towing four down. Information on the suitability of towing a manual Accent four down was scarce or contradictory, which caused me no end of frustration. The manual completely ignores the issue of recreational towing and the dealer (and others I asked) gave me contradictory information. All I could find is a 2008 technical service bulletin which is generic to all Hyundai vehicles. My experience, based on one trip of about 3000 miles, is that there is no problem four-down towing a 2013 Hyundai Accent with manual transmission. Place the car in neutral, key in ignition on ACC, hand brake off, radio and display off (even the clock does not display). I experienced no battery problems, no speed limitations and no transmission issues (so far!). There was no need to start the vehicle every so often. Blue Ox makes the base plate and suitable tow bar (I used Aladdin). It cost me about $2000 CDN to get it ready to tow.
  19. Please only those with experience reply! I'm new to this but have done a lot of research and it show's that towing a 3/4 ton 2500 quad cab 03' diesel truck that has a weight of 6,800 lbs is not a problem for a 2013 phaeton Allison 6 speed with a ISC 380hp 40 ft unit ? The Phaeton has a tow rating of 10,000 lbs per Tiffin representative via phone conversation. Label on towing hitch state 10,000 LBs and information given by dealership. Just wanted to know if anyone out there has the same set up as what I'm wanting to use and can you give me any feed back before I purchase the towing equipment needed. Again please only respond if you have first hand knowledge or a very similar setup! Thanks
  20. I usually tow our 2011 Jeep liberty 4 down backside of the motor home. But from time to time I would like to drag another or different non towable choice along. So I am looking at the purchase of a car hauler to pull behind the motorhome. However, I have a math problem that I could sure use some assistance with.OK, found the car hauler I want to purchase. It would be used for general trailer use, but I also want to be able to tow a vehicle behind our motor home without making any contact between the front trailer bed and motor home when making turns of a tight nature. Let me see if I can ask this to where it makes sense or that you can figure out what it is I am asking. Here are the basics to the math equation: Motor home 99" wide corner to corner at rear Trailer is 84" wide at front of deck corner to corner. Trailer tongue is 40" from ball hitch to front of trailer deck. Center of rear axle to ball of trailer hitch receiver 146" (I believe this number needs to come into play when figuring the fulcrum/pivot point. On a F250 this distance would be 56") My choices would be to take the trailer as it sits....however not sure about how the above numbers would add up to making trailer to motor home contact on a tight turn. Have the front corners on the trailer cut diagonal at about 12" from the ends making kind of a boat tail front cut. Extend the tongue of the trailer by 12" Since the trailer is built as deck on wrap frame, have the deck moved back 6 to 12" (however this will change the center load point over the trailer axles, this may not be that big of a problem when loaded, but empty could result in a light tongue weight). FWIW: The trailer is 20', 83" deck width, wood floor, dove tailed, medium duty, 2 each 5,200# axles with brakes on each, 2 5/16 bulldog hitch, 5" frame, with ramps stored under the rear of the deck, 7K drop jack. OK back to the math, again the point is that I am looking to avoid any expensive fiberglass work from the trailer making contact with the motor home rear corner on any tight turns. HELP, I appreciate your assistance,
  21. Has anyone installed tow brackets on a Jeep Unlimited Sahara themselves? Also, what is the average price for me to purchase & having someone install all equipment to tow my vehicle from a shop: purchase & install tow brackets, wiring harness, labor, etc ?
  22. I was reading the instruction manual for a Roadmaster RM3477 noticed it stated that the steering wheel of the towed vehicle must be locked or secured to prevent the vehicle from moving and damaging the vehicle and dolly by hitting the dolly fenders. My questions are: (1) Do all dollies have this requirement? (2) How likely is it that the car will shift position if not secured? (3) How do you secure the steering wheel if doesn't lock with the key (mine doesn't lock)?
  23. I towed my 2007 Impala from New Mexico to Florida using a U-haul dolly. When I got to Florida the rear tires were "scalloped" and made so much noise that I had to replace them. The tire shop said the car's shocks were fine so they weren't sure why it happened unless it was a geometry problem (angle of the rear shocks in relation to the movement of the tires on bumps etc when the car was on the dolly. Has anyone else had this problem or have an idea why it happened?
  24. I would like to tow a 2001 Lexus RX 300 behind a 32 ft. Fleetwood Fiesta gas RV. Is that possible?
  25. I have been told that installing a battery disconect switch would eliminate the need to pull fuse while towing for wheels down. Towing a 05 Malibu. Any info will be appreciated.
