FRED's

Recommended Posts

Like any chassis, there are trade-offs.

A FRED really combines many attributes of gas chassis (suspension, brakes, etc) with the diesel engine in front, front radiator and Allison transmission.

WBill, I think they stopped making FRED's....therefore they are used.  FRED had a lot going for them, like not getting clogged up on dirt or dusty roads, lighter chassis compared to a DP, the drawback was noise!

If my memory serves me I remember a coach back many years ago that looked like Conventional Cab Tractor. It was not as long in front but still had a engine out in front of the driver. It wasn't a class "C", it was an "A". However I thought it was one of the ugliest coaches I ever saw.

Does anyone else recall this coach?

If the OP wants a FRED he might try looking for a Super "C". I don't have first hand knowledge but I would think it would still be noisy but not as bad as a FRED.

Champion comes to mind, but can't remember if it was gas or diesel.   The Renegade is nice and quiet, like a gas front.  You can have a normal conversation!
