A point of clarification.  Memorial Day is not a day to honor veterans...that's Veteran's Day, Nov 11 each year.  The official definition of Memorial Day is to honor any person who died while serving on active duty.  However, most military people think of Memorial Day as a day to honor those killed in action.

Right on! Memorial Day is the day each year to remember, grieve, and respect the memory of those that did not make it home alive. Many volunteered , others were conscripted, but they most all served our country as best they could.

The origin of Memorial Day was a call by General John Logan in 1868 to honor the civil war dead by decorating their graves with flowers on the 30th of May hence Decoration Day which ultimately became the day known asMemorial Day a day to honor all who gave the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom. Remember all gave some but some gave all God Bless Them.
