Camp Stove and BBQ Grill Box

Recommended Posts

My "Aussie Walk About" charcoal grill that I've had for seven years and used for many an LSU tail gate party has seen its better days and needs to be replaced.  Rather than purchasing a new charcoal grill, my eldest son asked if I had seen a "BBQ Grill Box" to use on the my burner Browning (Camp Chef) camp stove.   I use my camp stove often to prepare big pots of gumbo, fry cat fish and fry bacon (the wife will not allow the smell of bacon in "her" motorhome!).   The camp stove fits nicely in the basement of the motorhome in a convenient carry bag.   The same style bag would be used for the "Grill Box".  A "Grill Box" would eliminate the mess associated with a charcoal grill (bags of charcoal, lighter fluid, ashes, etc.).

Does anyone on the forum have experience using a "Grill Box" on their camp stoves?   If "yes", is the experience good or bad?

Here are links to the camp stove and grill box info:

F,

I just had a look and the stove, it is the same as the Camp Chef but more money FYI.  That said I have a similar cook top and you might have something here. I will keep track and see what happens..Guys like CManholt and and Herman and obedb, I wonder if they know how to cook? Now Joe he can make a bad pot of Texas chili but he leaves out the beans...go figure.

I have the Camp Chef Stove also the Grill Box and a Cast Iron Griddle. It works out well when I cook for our rallys.  A friend who has the same thing and I cooked Pancakes for the Northeast Area Rally one morning in 2015 in Essex Junction. Had one person mixing 5# boxes of Pancake batter. Secondperson filling pancake dispensers withe batter for us.

The grill box is great for Burgers, Steaks, Ribs and Chicken. It also is goreat for grilling Corn on the cob in its husk.

You two are from Texas, what do you know...we Westerners like the beans too. I will give it to Joe...he makes a great pot of chili even if it is missing the beans...

I agree with Herman and Carl, why would anyone ruin a perfectly good pot of CHILI by adding beans, serve them on the side please.LOL-_-

RSbill, I wasn't adding beans....I had my coach and Obedb's coach next to you and we were all parked in a valley with little air circulation .

If I add beans my DW yells at me, THATS NOT REAL CHILI, also we don't do sweet chili, if it makes you sweat a little its good! I also cant stand those large beans, I prefer black beans on the side.

I carry the following cooking items in our coach;

https://www.weberbbq.com.au/weber-q/baby-qs/

https://www.weber.com/US/en/grills/smokey-joe-series

Tripod for cooking over the campfire, I have a Lodge Dutch oven that hangs from it and the grille that came with it.

Traeger for smoking meats/fish or my favorite.... Chipotle wings.

Propane weber for fast cooking and cool down i.e. roadside cooking while in route, usually at a picnic area.

Weber charcoal for campground cooking (better flavor than the propane)

I have no outdoor burners, anything like that goes over the fire in the Dutch oven.

You Texans are out numbered....but I will agree if it all tasted like Joe's it is still pretty darn good!:P

Joe I am still learning, I could not carry a tri-pod in scouts and haven't had the coach long enough to get the real cooking gear until it ran like I wanted so you are the main man on that score. Thanks  I do have have the  dutch oven but too big for we two and the little charcoal Weber old style no handle. Having a hard time with the tripod since I could make it for a lot less and make the bag too...we will see timing is everything. The grill, they talk of a heavy grill rim so food does not roll off, bigger than normal just turned upside down? The Treager, jury is out on that one.

Duane --

My wife and two sons think a grill box for the camp stove is the way to go.  Is your grill box for one burner or two?  Is a grill box relatively easy to clean following use i.e. a good brushing of the grates and inside the box is adequate?  Given the number of family and friends I feed at an LSU football tailgating party I likely need the the two burner grill box.  Also, do you use your griddle for bacon or do you have another "fun toy" for frying bacon on the camp stove?

Regarding the chili comments, I agree that true Texas chili has no beans!   Taco Soup has beans!

This is a little bit on topic, some very interesting read about cast iron cookware, which is what I prefer to cook chili in.http://www.seriouseats.com/2014/11/the-truth-about-cast-iron.html While many of you are into chili, I love seafood gumbo made over an open fire in a cast iron pot, and please don't put chicken in gumbo, just lots of oysters, shrimp, flaked fish, crab claws and andouille sausage for seasoning.

Kay, that sounds delicious!! In Japan there is a meal called Yosenabi a seafood stew cooked in a beef broth. It is killer good, delicate and very tasty. I will have to try it in a   cast iron pot. The entire meal is cooked as needed in the same pot all together except the rice and of course the beer.
