Just wanted to pass on a little gem of an overnight spot. Found this on the way from Fort Sumner, NM to Las Cruces. No hook ups at all but the view is great. Close to the highway but not much traffic at night. You could run a slide or two out but I would only do it curbside. Not sure how long you can stay. Def worth the money. It's on Route 70 in the Hondo Valley at the junction where 380 splits off to Lincoln, NM. Happy trails and stay sharp.

Isn't that the pull out for the Historic Monument Of Lincoln County, New Mexico. The other name for 70 is The Billy The Kid Trail.:D

Lots of history in that area.

Bill, yes it is and 380 goes to Lincoln, Capitan, Carrizozo on 380/54, then San Antonio at I-25.  70 takes you to Ruidoso and over the Mountain to Hwy 54...South is El Paso, North is Mountain Home cut off.  Never seen a RV of any kind or OTR Truck, stay over at that pull out...You may have DPS in am...one night max! :)

Whichever you go from there, you'll like it...if your headed West, Google Pie Town on Hwy. 60 out of Socorro!  Best Pies, you'll find any where.

Punsxy and Sweetie Pie.

I just read your Blog....had the same situation in 2015 and my Lucky Girl had been with me for 15 years, 2 months and 22 days!  Yea, I got tears reading your good bye...your right about the Good Lord deciding what you get next.  I got Linda and she has a 14 year old Blake Lab and a 16 year old Rat Terrier.  They too will go shortly, but in the time they have left, we enjoy every waking moment with them!

The drive from Sorocco West is terrific and if you take the road into the Salt River Canyon, oh my what a spectacular site. it is a slow drive out but worth every minute and every mile. We have been that way several times now but Pie Town shops closed, DARN...

Yep, that is the place. I found it on freecampsites.com when I was looking for a free spot to overnight. I saw where one guy did a review on it. Then I went to google satellite (I use it all the time) and was able to locate it. It is tucked in right there in the north west corner of the junction. I will say it is very dark at night so if you like a lot of streetlights, this may not be good for ya. When we left in the morning and headed west on 70, we passed a couple more places we could have parked. Casinos and shops with huge parking lots.

Thank you Sir. She will be missed for quite awhile. Thanks

Another interesting area/CG that we enjoy when on that route just west of Carrizozo, NM on 380 is: https://www.blm.gov/visit/valley-of-fires

Don't know if this google satellite view link will work.  If not, do your own-- that VERY recent lava flow is worth a look:

Brett,

I looked at the map and saw one of the most inspiring places I have been. It is the St. Joseph Apache Mission in Mescalero. It has a rich history and is a beautiful Mission.

We are headed that way as our 1st retirement trip in January.  Actually going south to Las Cruces and then west to Yuma.  On the return trip we are exploring New Mexico.  Since I will be retired, no corporate mandated time line to be on, love the idea.  Wolfe, thanks for sharing the Google map, got a new place to go see.  A couple of years ago, coming back from Yuma we were fascinated by the lava flows around Grants NM and decided that we had a new interest and another topic or interest for sightseeing.  Amazing, from one topic posted here, a number of areas to go and things to see... Thanks Herman, we will be putting the Mission in Mescalero on the list too.

Great times and safe travels to all.

Carl,

I love to ask people if they know where US Hwy 380 begins and ends. My answer to them is that it begins in Greenville and ends in San Antonio. I get the strangest looks. They all know that San Antonio is far south of Greenville Texas and that US Hwy 380 runs East to West. Then I tell them it is San Antonio NEW MEXICO. :D However some still scratch their heads with a funny look.

If you like Lava, go to Carrizozo on US 380 either from I-25 or up US 54.  On 380 you'll find the Valley of Fire and they have RV overnight.

Herman, you snuck in before me!

Hermanmullins,

Thanks for the recommendation of Mescalero Apache Mission, we stopped there after Three Rivers Petroglyphs. We really enjoyed the mission. We are going to the San Xavier mission today in Tucson.
