Galveston

Recommended Posts

We are at Stella Mare CG in Galveston, anyone coming this way I would highly recommend this CG. Large concrete pads at every site to park on and good space between sites. Friendly staff and good facilities. We went about 1 mile down the road and stopped at a small fresh seafood store, picked up some shrimp and had wonderful shrimp cocktail for supper!

No, we were lucky and didn’t have much travel problem. Galveston seem like a good place, tomorrow we will investigate more.

I have never stayed there. I think it was under construction last time in the area. Stayed at Dellanera RV Park across the road and at Galveston Island State Park.

To many good places to eat. Look at Nonno Tony's Seafood Kitchen, Willie G's Seafood & Steaks. Look around on Strand Street. Down by Willie G's look for the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA at the Texas Seaport Museum.

Moody Gardens is another place to visit.

In Texas City at the Grey Hound Park is a festival of lights plus some rides. If the weather is nice it is worth the $10 (was last year.)

All the places bill stated to eat are good.

On the mainland, Texas City, Gringo's Mexican Food. If you want less expensive Mexican go into town and Taqueria Valencia and Taqueria Jaliance (Sp on both) Also is Grand Prize BBQ and it is good.

Further on up the road off the Interstate is Masa Sushi if you are into Japanese food. On the other side of the highway is a Gumbo bar and I enjoy the heck out of their gumbo. It is next to a 5 Guys Hamburger joint. If you have never had a 5 Guys you need to try it.

Here's the kicker - travel East on Hwy 646 to Hwy 3 and turn right. You are in Dickinson,TX, and just down the road about a mile or so on the left hand side is "The Fish Place," and you can get all you can eat catfish and 2 sides for around 12 bucks, Whe you leave there just take hwy 3 back to I-45 and Galveston. They have a diverse menu.

If we were there we'd put on a lunch or dinner for you but hey, we are going to enjoy New Orleans food.

For a quick and cheap buffet we enjoy the Golden Coral in Galveston.

Roland --

Thanks for the update.  Last time I and my family were in the Galveston area 18 months ago the Stella Mare was just opening so we stayed at the Jamaica Beach RV Resort which my kids and grandkids totally enjoyed.   I'll have Stella Mare on my list for my next visit !

A few other dining suggestions to "experience" the Galveston area are Fisherman's Warf, Rainforest Café, Gaido's and The Spot.     These restaurant have good food and very fun atmospheres to get that "beachy" feel.    Gaido's is a "higher end" restaurant (i.e. Dockers and nice shirt of better place).

Also Way West Grill at Jamaica Beach is a good "mom and pop" place for pizza and other grill items (burgers et al).

Enjoy your time in south Texas!   If you have a chance, spend some time in the Texas Hill Country and enjoy the many wineries, olive ranches, restaurants, shopping etc. the area has to offer.  There are several nice RV resorts / parks in the Hill Country including Sunset Point RV Park near Marble Falls, TX or Buckhorn Lake RV Resort near Kerrrville, TX or Texas Wine Country Jellystone Park near Fredericksburg, TX.

I did forget to say, "The Pelican Club," at Gaido's, is open to the public...same food, chef and ambiance as it was, "Private", for 40+ years!

I sorted out the leak! We had new flooring put in 2 years ago and under the bedroom dresser they replaced the carpet. They used staples to fasten it to the plywood underlayment and one of the staples hit a water line and finally with all the bumping of driving it caused a hole that leaked. Did a line replacement and new plywood, just laid the carpet back and will figure attachment when we get home.

We ate at the saltwater Grill tonight, very good. We will probably try Gaido’s before we go. We will be Corpus Christi for a week and then RGV for a month. Then Big Bend and Alpine then wind back thru Hill Country and and start home.

Yes that is salt water. It is called West Bay.

Something I forgot earlier is you can take the ferry for free and see the dolphins or pay $$ for a boat tour to see them. You can park and just ride the ferry on the upper deck.

"everything is elevated here." Yep they got tired of replacing everything every year.😉 I bet Carl's place is elevated to.

Joe.

Where you see the cut, that's the Gulf of Mexico.  To the left is a retention pond that is very low salinity and when it rains it drains into it & there is no movement so it stagnates and is a big breeding ground.

Bill.

West Bay is opposite, across Steward Road and neast/swest.  The Island is shaped like a Boomerang!

My house is on pier and beams on a built up 3/4 ac lot, so I'm 23 feet above mean high tide...second highest on Island.  My garage is 1,110 sq. ft., and living quarters is 2,660...it hangs over garage on 3 sides.

Yes, I thought he was looking more North. In Google maps the park is still under construction. I had to go to Google earth pro to see where the place he was standing was. I agree  you are seeing mosquito pond road mosquito pond then goulf.

The last time I was there they were actually doing something smart. They had been dredging the ship channel and hauling the sand out to deep water and dumping it. Now they were pumping it up on the beach along the seawall to build up the beach. This seems to be better than paying to truck it in.

On that project it cost the Tax payer, nothing!  The Corps of Engineer built the Sea Wall in 1903 & still maintain it.  Normally it is the City Parks Board that maintain the Beach on our dime, but the last time off build up, was paid for by Tillman Feretitta , because he owns everything on the Seawall including the Amusement Pier!  He's the main driving force, behind getting gambling back to Texas!  He was Born on Island and among other Enterprises, owns Golden Nugget Casino's!  Our Dime pays to maintain his beach...so it really cost him nothing, call it Tax write off money!

So what's your point? I still think it is smarter to use the sand from dredging the ship canal to build up the public beach rather than hauling it to deep water and dumping it then than paying to truck it in. 😄

Bill, the point, is that, it's very expensive...Galveston Island has never "Trucked Sand" in!  The dredging of the ship channel is done by Houston, TC and Galveston contractors, for the Corps of Engineers, they charge $$$ to disperse it on the Island.:P Last time the Islanders paid for it, was in Winter of 2007. $15 million...who knows where Hurricane IKE put it, September 13, 2008?

The private beach, that is on the Moody Gardens Property, is white and was delivered from Destine, FL.

The cheapest (FREE) beach replenishment we have is by "Mother Nature", she moves sand from the North East to the South West, by tidal action, storms, and current and it all comes ashore in the San Louise Pass part of Galveston! :wacko:
