Travel between Durango, CO and Grand Junction, CO

Recommended Posts

The northbound trip on US550 is easier on the fearful. When you approach Ouray the curves for Northbounders are hugging the cliff walls.  From Ouray to Grand Junction is an easy trip. South bound from Ouray to Durango is not for the faint of heart until the drop offs stop.

We have run it both ways.

If you have the time, just north of Ridgway on 550 sets the Colorado Ridgway State Park. There are 69 full hookups. You pay for the rv daily and the tow costs a one time fee at a reduced rate. There are things to do in the area.

This drive is one of Colorado’s better, but even better would be to take 160 over to Delores and take the Delores river Road, 145 north over Lizard Head Pass. It looks like a Sawtooth from the spectacular Sawtooth mountains of Idaho. Take a little jog into Telluride and then back to 145 past Placerville and the old placer mines. There is an overlook of the river and the flume that delivered water to the mines at a million gallons a day with little to show for the effort. On to Naturita and Hwy 141 through Gateway and a special resort now for sale in the millions, car museum and all on the way to Grand Junction. This hwy is unique in geology. You start out at river level, and watch the river fall well below you then back to river level. The 1000 foot canyon walls climb high above you and squeeze you till they are barely 200 yards wide and the surrounding farms envelope you. Leaving this area you begin the drop into Grand Junction, believe me this is far more spectacular than 550 and one of Colorado’s best kept secrets! Going from south to north, the traffic all flows from the north so it is smooth sailing in your lane. Hope this helps, yes I have taken numerous Colorado guests over this route with a Class A pushers.
