Rapid City, South Dakota

Recommended Posts

Anybody know of any good campgrounds in the Rapid City area? We plan on doing Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, etc. We could stay in any of these areas but would like to stay in one spot for eight or nine days. We have a 41-foot, four-slideout pusher with toad on back. We would prefer something with a little width. We will also be going from there to Glacier NP.

Depending on what you are looking for, I have two: Hart Ranch which is a structured large campground, which is part of a membership program. The other is Sweetgrass Inn which is as unstructured as you get. It has full 50 amp hookups, is next to a wonderful B&B has a bar and restaurant. Approx 10 RV spaces, 2 years ago it was gravel and weeds but very nice friendly atmosphere.

I would also reccommend looking into some of the campgrounds in Custer State Park:

We drove through here a couple of years ago, and the area is just beautiful! The campgrounds fill up fast in the Summer, though, so I'd also suggest booking as soon as you have specific plans. Keep in mind that some of the areas might be inaccessable to a larger MH due to low tunnels.

In 2005 we stayed 8 days in Custer, SD at Yogi Bears Jellystone Campground. It is not a resort, but is nice and plenty of space. We made day trips to Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Badlands, etc. Very enjoyable. Would like to go back one day.....

In 2004 we stayed in Custer Crazy Horse Campground and found it to be quite friendly. It doesn't look like it is getting very good reviews these days. You can check it and a number of other campgrounds around the town of Custer at RV Park Reviews. You can also investigate campgrounds all over the US on this site. If you are so inclined, you can contribute your own ratings and comments on campgrounds where you stay.

Now, upon second thought maybe it was Flintstone's....one of those cartoon characters!! Anyway, it was still a nice park and we enjoyed the stay.....

We stayed at Rafter J near Hill City recently and can confirm it is a very nice place. Lots of room between spaces, very clean, pancake breakfast and very quiet. Including toad, our rig is just over 55 feet, leaving plenty of room front and back. Between spaces is about sixty feet, possibly more. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Not the lowest price in the area, but worth every penny. The place has become our standard by which we decide where we want to stay. Enjoy!

I just got an e-mail from the South Dakota travel.

I am considering on making the trip the end of Sept.

Looks like a fun week, nothing about RVs, but there are as you have found, many campgrounds.

I just thought this might be something fun, 1,500 buffalos How cool would that be!!!!!!

The web site address looks funny but it is a travel agent
