North Carolina Camping

Recommended Posts

We are going to North Carolina next week. We are looking for good campgrounds for a 40ft. Class A. We are particularly interested in Greensboro, Raleigh/Durham, Outer Banks, and Ashville. Any recommendations?

In Greensboro area try: Greensboro Campground 1896 Trox Street Greensboro NC 27406 (ask for 50 amps) 50 amp pull thru sites are $40 per night. Raleigh does not have any campgrounds but you can find spots where I-40 and 95 connect. Durham has one RV/mobile home site available called Birchwood RV Park, 5901 Wilkins Drive, Durham NC 27705 (we stayed there for 5 months while at UNC hospital).

Outer Banks have many sites but reserve in advance this time of the year with a 40 footer. We just returned from a trip to Texas for 5 weeks and had a grand time.

We always use the national campgrounds on the outer banks islands. No hook ups but rate is low. Wth a up to date motorhome one should be able to stay a few days without hookups. Been there a number of times over the last 35 years, as recent as last year.

There are two State Parks only a short distance from Raleigh proper: Jordan Lake to the southwest, and Falls Lake to the north. Both are conveniently located for sightseeing- that is, not more than about 15 miles outside Raleigh, Durham, or Chapel Hill. Both have multiple camping areas, and both can accomodate larger units in some areas. Rates are very reasonable, lots of lakeside views, and most of the campsites are well treed and shaded. We lived in the area until very recently and have camped at both often. You can reserve online, or call ahead.

Enjoy!

Rutledge Park, just south of Asheville is a great spot for a motorhome with kids. Big lake, nice area. Asheville is a nice town, minor league baseball, Blue Ridge Parkway, Chimney Rock State Park etc. We spent several days there last summer in a 42 ft motorhome. Our Labrador Retreiver liked the lake!

We have just returned from Lake Toxaway Resort. We stayed there a week and loved it. Lots of waterfalls and quaint towns around to visit.

Hendersonville/Flat Rock area is just 30 minutes from Asheville. We've stayed at Lakewood RV Pk in Flat Rock the last 2 years. Very nice pull through sites, some back-ins, the park models are very well kept.

Another vote for Camp Hatteras. However this was before last years hurricane. Also stayed years ago at KOA but it was a little pricey. Was considering coming this year but was cancelled. Give us any updated info if you go.

Oops!! I didn't check date of your post----you probably been there already.
