Question

Please help us plan our first cross country trip. Leaving from central NC. Heading to Pueblo CO, and then Albequerque for Balloon Fiesta. We have eight days to get there.

What are the not-to-be-missed-sights?

Favorite campgrounds?

38' class A. I'm a bit overwhelmed!

You should be a bit overwhelmed.  That's a 2000 mile trip in 8 days and you want to do some sightseeing along the way.  If you drive 300 miles per day it's going to take 7 days to get to Albuquerque and if there is something you wanted to do in Pueblo that's about all the time you have with a budget of 8 days.  You will be "passing through" some amazing places and I hope you can add some time to your trip.  If not, and you can only plan one stop, I would really recommend St. Louis and the "Arch" and the Budweiser Factory Tour (even if you are not a beer drinker).

Sed,

Welcome to the Forum. Sound like a nice trip.

While in Pueblo don't miss the Memorial at the Convention Center. Pueblo has the distinction of having 5, yes five Medal Of Honor recipients for there. It is to me a very Great Memorial.

Going south on I-25 you will go through Raton, NM just off the Interstate and south of Raton is the NRA shooting range and store. South of there is the town of Cameron where Philmont Boy Scout Ranch is located.

By the way, Stay away from the KOA on the North side of Pueblo. Park is fair but the absolute Devil to get into. Santa Fe ain't bad either.

Your are passing through a great area.

If you go through Santa Fe, New Mexico the Blue Sky RV park is Grrreat. It is just south and on the East side of the freeway, It has very easy access and terrific views of Santa Fe and south toward Albeq. Its facilities are very good. Many attending the festival stay there every year...MAKE YOU RESERVATIONS NOW!!! LIKE YESTERDAY.

From NC to Pueblo CO/ I-40  west is a good bet. When you get to Amarillo, consider heading north to Dalhart and then take US 87 to Raton NM, join I-25 and head north to Pueblo. I have used  that route many times over the years. The Big Texan Steakhouse  in Amarillo is a treat if you have time. RV Oasis west of Amarillo on 40 is a possible choice for overnight.

If you decide to experiment, be advised that most of the roads on Colorado's eastern plains can be very rough. Pueblo can also be a scorcher.

NC to Pueblo/ I 40 best choice. I -70 to Pueblo from central NC, in order to see the Arch is a longer way and a very boring ride once you redirect to Pueblo. More miles also.

Just 20 miles south of Pueblo is another Koa that is much better than the one in Pueblo. Right on the east side of I25 at the exit with high ground and great views of the mountains including Green Horn Mountain. And, as Herman says, we are the town of Hero's! I70 west to Limon Colorado is good, then Hwy 24 into Colorado Springs to pick up I25 south. 24 is kinda bumpy right now, but keep it to 55 and it's not too bad. We are 25 miles southwest of Pueblo and have a hookup in the driveway at our house (elec & water) for those that are willing to travel a little ways off the interstate. Stop on your way there and back again.

You definitely want to see Royal Gorge, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Bishops Castle, and a whole bunch of others!! Safe Travels!

The Balloon fiesta was a great experience for us in 2013. We stayed at a Casino Queen RV park in St Louis, IL which was right across the river from the Arch; we could see the Arch from the park.  On your route,  a very interesting tour is the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma.  We stayed in a state park but it was far from the university so really wouldn't recommend it.  In Amarillo you can visit Palo Duro Canyon, the Cadillac Ranch, and the steakhouse mentioned above.  We like to stay at Amarillo Ranch RV Park.  In Santa Fe we like Los Suenos RV Park.  There is so much to see along your route, Enjoy the journey!

Sed.

I agree with BillAdams !  As the song say's, "you got a long ways to go and a short time to get there"!  Therefor, you can't see all the sites mentioned above.  Question is, how much time can you spare on the way back home?
