Questions About Cross Country 404RB

Recommended Posts

I saw this on another forum and copied it as is.  I guess that's OK right? But he talks about something I didn't know either.  I've been to the MHS website a number of times and discounted this coach out of hand because the writeup said "

2016 Coachmen Cross Country 404RB Bath & 1/2, Pwr Salon Bunks, W/D, King

Because of the "Bunks" I never looked further because I don't want 6' of my coach taken up with bunks.  Do to his post I went back to the MHS website and sure enough!  What do you guys think?

Here's his post;

"Hi Guys,

I've seen the Coachman Cross Country 404RB listed on the Motorhome Specialists web site many times but never paid any attention because it said "Bunkhouse" of which I have no interest. By accident I clicked on it last evening and to my surprise it didn't have bunkbeds. At least not the standard configuration we're use to.

It's a terrific price for a 40' diesel pusher and a pretty good looking coach! What can you tell me about it?"

The link I saw said it was nearly 42'...with a 340 hp ISB.  That's a small engine for that big a coach.

We looked at a cross counry DP, PM me and I will tell you what we thought of it and why the HP can be so low on a coach that size.

Hi J, when did you last see one? I have no idea other than on the MHS web site and a couple videos I've seen today. It doesn't look like any TT I've ever seen but that could be because I've never seen TT!

harrtglos.  Regardless of length, it's an entry level new DP.  Minimum HP,  and thin veneer over thin plywood, lots of visual bling.  You can tow a toad, but with the HP and Torque, don't go over 4,000 pounds, regardless of the hitch.  I don't know how much you can pay, nor how you intend to use your coach.  For about $280K you can get a new Dutch Star DP by Newmar, 40' Tag and tow any towable toad you want, also your choice off Freightliner or Spartan chassis at no extra cost...build your own!  There are a lot of coach dealers out there besides mhs in Alvarado, TX.

If your determined to get new, then check all the new manufacturers of DP's...If you want to see some nice used DP's then Goggle Motorhomes of Texas!

Hey Carl,  $280 is more than I'm willing to pay for my first coach especially.  My wife wants a new coach so there's no conversation about used.  So from the new diesel standpoint it comes down to a Thor Palazzo 36.1 or Coachman Cross Country 404RB.  It's either one of those and I've already discounted the Palazzo or the Newmar Canyon Star 4002 gasser.  Those are my choices!  Unless you know of another DP around the same price as the Cross Country?  Regardless of the coach company it also must be a bath and a half!

Harry, the two we looked at also had rubber roofs. Been there done that. One of them when we looked at it while it was raining outside, it sounded like pebbles hitting the roof, our C was the same way. The A you barely hear it, mostly you hear it on the Max airs and the skylight in the shower. Much better sleep at night. DW is a light sleeper, she often didn't sleep at night in our old unit.

Just things to consider while you are shopping.

The video I saw said it has a full fiberglass roof system.  Things may have changed since 2010 and I'm doing what I can to check it out more completely and see if I can find some owners to talk to.

harry, Goggle Coachman, the factory...do the same with Tiffin and Fleetwood.  Fleetwood has DP Bounder, very popular.  Expedition, also popular!

We looked at a Fleetwood excursion in 2014 it was new. Not a bad unit but it had some serious design flaws with access to the engine. It was a 2013 leftover and I had the dealer down from $199,500 to $135,000. You have no idea how happy we are we didn't make that purchase.

The sales person told us the roof was Leather. Haha, still laugh about that. It did have a residential refrigerator in it from the factory which was the first I had come across.

Harry.  What happened to the Newmar Canyon Star?  You said you wanted a quality coach...your not going to get that in a CC by Coachman aka Forest River!

Harry, I just looked through he link, looks nice. The bunk is over the couch and dinette, which is interesting. From the photo the roof looks like its rubber or some sort of product like that, you can tell by the way it rolls down the side and the its a different texture from the side walls.
