Seeing the Foliage in New England

We will be coming back from Nova Scotia, so this will be around the first two weeks of October of this year. -
I am going to be traveling from Maine to the Smokey Mountains this fall and wanted to maximize my trip taking in all of the fall foliage, does anyone have a recommended route of travel?
