When going through driver training last year for a semi driving job, the trainers would ask us what the signs said on the bridge just after we passed through the bridge. Every time. Doesn't take much to start noticing and reading every sign you pass and committing it to short term memory.

I practiced reading EVERY warning sign out loud while driving my car for a few weeks before taking my test. Good thing too, as sure enough the examiner asked about a rather hidden sign after we'd passed it.

Some of the signs to watch are not near bridges - watch for signs warning against truck traffic, warning about a truck route which ends or turns, etc. Not every warning about an upcoming problem is as clear as we'd like.

When I was a brand new semi driver, just back from Vietnam, I was on US 62  and a designated "truck route" up in Buffalo NY and figured I did not need to worry about low underpasses. It was a truck route.  I was coming up on one and suddenly realized the low clearance 12'2' warning sign.  There was a car right on my A** and I ended up coasting right under that low clearance.  The roof of the box furniture trailer peeled right off just just like a sardine can.  After all these years, I still duck!

5'er friend of a friend went on the Merritt Parkway in CT.  Tore the roof back on the 5'er for several feet.

"Trucks, buses, trailers, towed vehicles, and all vehicles 8 feet (2.4 m) tall or taller are not allowed on any part of the parkway due to its low bridges, narrow lanes, and tight curve radii."  And in NYS, RVs are not permitted on any Parkways!

  3. Roadside Assistance Companies are only as good as the towing recovery companies they contract with.  And some of those towing recovery companies are not that great to begin with!!   And many towing recovery companies want nothing to do with roadside assistance companies because they are not the most prompt at paying.  At one time one of the national towing associations rated roadside assistance companies and how well they paid, and none of them paid well.  One of the best is one which serviced equestrian owners who towed their own horses, US Riders Equestrian Motor Plan.  Don't know if they cover the RV industry.   I've had both Coach Net and SafeRide.  Had several good experiences with Coach Net but they left me hanging the last time I contacted them.  It was a lockout on a utility trailer.  They maintained that they only cover lockouts on RV, ie: travel trailers or motorhomes.  They covered me and my family ion our personal vehicles, so I thought they would cover the utility trailer also - but then I should not think!!  Need to read the fine print.  I have no experience with SafeRide, and hope I don't.  If my travel trailer needs a tow, I may be in trouble, as my 2" ball coupler is 48" off the ground.

  4. In reviewing their web site it would appear that Good Sam and Coach net service may be the same thing? All seem to be a part of something named National Motor Club? I tried sending a letter to coach net to the address on the back of my membership card and it came back as not deliverable to that address.
I will be going back to Good Sam this time.

Good Sam ERS contracts with different ERS companies, depending on the deal they can get. They are currently contracted with Allstate RV Roadhelp. FMCA just recently contracted with Allstate RV Roadhelp. Allstate RV Roadhelp has a BBB rating of C-. Coach-Net is their own company and have been owned by National Motor Club for a very long time. Coach-Net has a BBB rating of A. The towing industry also rates ERS companies and rates Coach-Net as the premier ERS in the ERS industry to deal with.

  5. Good Sam Club is part of Good Sam Entrprises which grew out of Affinity Group, Inc., which also operates Camping World. I had Camping World Roadcare ERS, the sister company of the Good Sam ERS. They sent me a just released, state prison inmate, to fix my transmission. Actually, I should say that one of Roadcare's contractors sent him. Old beat up black pickup, and he had is girlfriend in tow. How unprofessional I thought. He could not fix my problem, but did lock my transmission in drive,so that I could continue on home. Was out in the middle of nowhere in a rest area in northenr Alabama when that happened. We were very happy to be alive when we pulled out of that rest area! Then on the same trip, they abandoned me over the weekend in Columbus Oh when they could not find a service provider to replace a generator belt. I found my own road service to get me back on the road. That was when I decided to switch to Coach-Net. Have been very happy with Coach-Net. I just renewed with Coach-net and they kept me at the old rate and plan, saving me $40 over what the current best plan

  6. My experience with Allstate RV wouldn't be worthy of a "C" rating. I've had excellent past experience with Coach-Net but I am concerned about what it will be under the new ownership. Like many others, I signed up for multiple years before the sale of the company. Guess time will tell.....

To my knowledge, Coach-Net has long been, and continues to be a part of National Motor Club (http://nmc.com/). There is no new ownership of Coach-Net. Coach-Net has parted ways with FMCA, therefore FMCA has chosen to contract with Allstate RV Roadhelp. And there is nothing saying that we members of FMCA cannot stay with Coach-Net. They have treated me very well and I certainly intend to. In fact, I just renewed with them, and they even kept me on at the old rated and plan. Saved me $40 over their current rate. So it is obvious that they value their long time customers! Don't know what will happen next year but right now they have a very happy customer!

  7. Did anyone at FMCA look at the Better Business Bureau's "C-" rating for Allstate RV Roadhelp before signing on with them? At least Coach-Net has a "A" rating! Would rather have FMCA go without a road assistance benefit plan and just recommend Coach-Net, than actually contract with Allstate considering their poor BBB rating. Please don't contract with someone who will provide the lousy roadside service response like I got from a commercial enterprise "club." It puts our organization's good name in poor company!

  8. FMCA has contacted Pilot Flying J and they confirmed that the My Rewards RV cards are being discontinued. Any active My Rewards RV cards can still be using until January, 2015. Pilot Flying J is partnered with the Good Sam Club for fuel discounts so FMCA has discontinued promoting this benefit.

The FMCAssist medical evacuation coverage is available to all FMCA members for assistance services. By purchasing the yearly coverage through FMCAssist and Seven Corners, you receive a plan that covers costs associated with the services. The yearly fee is $85 for one person or $105 for two people or family. The coverage is available worldwide and you can travel in any type vehicle so it is not limited to motorhome travel only.

We feel that we have many other benefits that make the membership worthwhile such as the monthly magazine, campground discounts, Michelin tire discount, Fantasy RV Tours and Caravans discount, advocacy, etc. We feel the most important benefit is the camaraderie and fellowship of the association members.

I don't think it has a thing to do with FMCA. I think we can thank certain Flying J / Pilot ex-employees who scammed many trucking companies and their own company. The $85 million dollar settlement really hurt Flying J / Pilot, not just in the pocket book, but their integrity too.

  9. We take along two cats when we go camping. They don't like it one bit when the engine starts. They run and hide. But they come out in 15 or 20 minutes and start wandering around. They both love to lounge in the sun while going down the road. Also like to look out the window at everything going by. The oldest, BJ, wants to help me drive. Think he knows that I am controling what is happening.

As to the litterbox, there was a cabinet under the fridge. I checked it out to make sure there was nothing in there that could hurt them and it looked idea for the litter box. Took the door off the cabinet, and put up a curtain rod and curtain. Litter box is in there. The cats have no problem going in that cabinet to their litter box. We change the litter every day, sometimes twice a day.

My biggest problem is their water. They both like to play in it and splash it on the floor. Have hardwood floors.

Both the cats are house cats. The oldest was out once that we know of. When the door is opened they run the other way, which is good in the motorhome. They seem to be very happy looking outside and staying inside.

  11. Thought I ought to report on the new 2013 FMCA North American Road Atlas and Travel Guide. Actually, this is the DWs report and not mine, I'm just the messenger! I should start by saying that my wife does not like spiral bound atlases!!! But I ordered it anyway. Before I ordered, I told her all about it, including the fact it was spiral bound. Well , it came while we were planning a western trip for this coming spring. As to the review, I can't get it away from her. We have a Rand McNally Walmart atlas (hers), a old large print Rand McNally Atlas, a older Rand McNally Motor Carriers Atlas, and a older Michelin Atlas. they are all spiral bond except her Rand McNally Walmart Atlas. She has told me how the new FMCA atlas has all the Walmarts close to the interstates on it, all the different campgrounds on it, and especially all the different special points of interest on it, But I don't know, as I have not been able to get it away from her yet. She hasn't said anything about it being spiral bound yet! I don't think she has noticed. Did I mention the fact that she does not like spiral bound atlases?

  12. Our National President, Charlie Schrenkel, and Ric Ricordati, the Western Area President both responded by email, to the person who brought this up on the other forum. She gave FMCA " kudos to FMCA for their quick response to my complaint to them".

  13. Just north of Bath, NY you want to go up route 54 to Hammondsport and stop at the http://www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org/. That have fantastic old motorcycle, aircraft, and automobile exhibits. Really neat museum.

You also want to do the Corning Museum of Glass, http://www.cmog.org/, in Corning, NY,

And in Big Flats, NY there is the http://www.soaringmuseum.org/ and the http://www.wingsofeagles.com/.

And if you are into old classic wooden boats, you need to make a trip north to Clayton, NY and visit the Antique Boat Museum, http://www.abm.org/ . Gorgeous old wooden boats , some in service and other being restored in drydock. You have to see the "Pardon Me" with its Packard 4M2500 engine, You can see many of their boats on their Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/antiqueboatmuseum . But they look so much better in real life!!!

And if you are a Marine or military guy, there is the http://www.cutco.com/company/visitorsCenter.jsp , which houses the KA-BAR Knife museum, in Olean, NY.

And while we are talking knives, there is the http://www.zippo.com/about/article.aspx?id=1584 , the Zippo lighter and Case knife museum in Bradford, Pa.

  14. I started out using Good Sam's sister company, Camping World Road Care roadside assistance. It had same call service and same service contractors, First time I used them, the contractor sent me a man who had just been released from the Alabama State Prison system. He was in a unmarked pickup with his girlfriend, He was able to get me going the next day. I spent the overnight in a Alabama Rest Stop waiting for the guy to come back and fix me up. The second time was at Columbus, Oh. Alternator belt broke Saturday morning. They could not find anyone to fix me up. Wanted to tow me to a RV show that would not open til Monday morning. I was in a safe place and told them to find me Road Service to change the belt. I ended up hoofing to a parts store late Sunday morning to get some stuff to make a temp fix to get me out of town to a truckstop where they hooked me up with a Road Service truck outfit who got me a belt and installed it. That was the end of anything to do with Good Sam Enterprises or Camping World except for the store.

I switched to Coach-Net three years ago and have been very happy with them. They have gone above and beyond what I expected and went beyond what their contracted stated. Super good company! I highly recommend Coach-Net!!!

  15. The Sumitomo 22.5 on my coach are made in Japan. The seven year old tires are soon to be replaced with made in the USA Firestones FS560 Plus! Hearing very good reports on them.

Had no problems or complaints with the Sumitomos.ST727.

  16. I have Alcoa aluminum wheels. The extensions on current 1994 coach were junk when I purchased it used. I replaced them with solid extensions from Alcoa. They have many different types and styles for their aluminum wheels. You can see them at http://www.alcoa.com/alcoawheels/north_america/en/info_page/accessories_hd_valve_stem_ext_stabilizer_kits.asp Do some searching on their site as they also have some other options such as different length valve stems. I figure that if Alcoa sells them for their wheels, they should be good enough for me.
