I agree. I have seen many softeners outside the unit .

It has been a number of years since we were in the Carsbad area but we were there to go to the Caverns. We stayed at a campground at White City. We then drove the car to the Caverns. It had full hookups. Sorry I can't remember anything more but it was an ok place to stay. The Carsbad Caverns are awesome.
