Greetings:
I towed a brand new 2003 VW Golf Diesel with manual transmission for
several thousand miles behind my Born Free 24 ft motor home a few
years ago using a Blue Ox baseplate and towbar purchased that year.
Unfortunately the Blue Ox baseplate/vehicle connection was not up to the task
and I had to stop towing the Golf. The car itself towed beautifully. If you are
interested in my experience call me at 201-760-1074. I did take the
trouble to visit Blue Ox in Pender, Nebraska in 2008 and told them of the problem
I encountered. The engineer I spoke to was very sympathetic and basically
agreed with my observation about the design. I got the impression they
would review the design but do not know if they have done so.
I have since noted that Roadmaster also offers baseplates for the VW Golf.
A review on their website of the VW Golf installation shows a baseplate
design that, in my opinion, would not cause the problem that I encountered
earlier.
By the way, VW is unhelpful in answering any inquiries about towing. I have been
unable to get clear answers about towing a DSG equipped VW model. On the
surface the DSG transmission, being a dual clutch mechanical transmission
without a torque converter, ought to be towable. I would like to have this confirmed
before I buy but have been stonewalled by their automatic "NEIN" response.
Any experience by any member towing a DSG-equipped toad would be
appreciated.
