bowrpwr Report post Posted April 8, 2009 This is an FYI when chasing down mysterious 12v wiring problems - first time ever encountered! Those really cool custom trailering looms that you get w/ the tow bar accessory packages caused this guy some short term grief. After chasing down most of the obvious causes of towing-related fuse blows, I discovered that one of the little screws inside the connector on each end, securing the individual wires to the connector, had threaded themselves totally out and were just randomly rolling around inside, deadshorting whichever two or more contact pins they came in contact with. In fact most of the little screws were loose, and could have compounded the dead short problem over time. Just because these looms are really pretty, don't assume they are trouble-free!! garykd Report post Posted April 12, 2009 Disassembling tightening and reassembling both the coach and toad connectors should be on everyones annual maintenance list. I do this during the month I do all my annual maintenance tasks. The umbilical cables have been notorious for the wire connector screws coming loose. The umbilical cable get a lot of bouncing around while traveling down the road.
mikemopar Report post Posted April 28, 2009 I Agree with Gary, those round connectors have been around for ages but in my experiences have bee the problem 9 times out of ten. I have seen corrosion set in connecting the polls and shorting out. My maintenance tip would be to clean the connections, dab a little of loctite on the tiny screws and coat with a DI-electric grease. Or what I do is replace it with a flat four connector.
