Lap Sealant For Rubber Or EDPM Roofs

When you are resealing areas of your roof on a Class A, is it necessary or adviseable to remove all of the old sealant first? If sealant must be removed what is the easiest way to do that?

If the old sealant is dry and cracked it is best to remove it. I use a combination of dull putty knives, a painters tool, utility knife, etc. Main thing is be careful not to make holes in the membrane.

Some sealants will peel off once you get them started and others come off in bits and pieces. If it has any gooeyness left, a cooler day and/or shady spot may help. A little bit of residue that is stuck tight won't hurt as long as it is clean. Areas that the old sealant was gone may need to be cleaned with a scrubby pad and water before resealing.

Thanks for the response. I also checked with Dicor Corporation and they said basically the same thing, that if the old sealant is loose remove it but if there are just cracks in it you can just seal over it. Thanks again for the response.
