  1. Has anyone ever used just plain old petrolatum on the posts and connectors?

I also have a question about the cable lengths....in the recent magazine article about batteries, it states that all the battery connection cables should be the same length? I am not sure how you can do that with the different connections to different batteries?

  2. The wraparound windshield in my 2006 Monaco Cayman cracked about 3 weeks ago while driving over a large speed bump at a 45 deg angle. It cracked in the left top corner and then popped and ran all the way down to the dash. The cracked area is approx 18" wide and top to bottom.

My insurance is covering it, but I would like to know if I need to "watch for this or that" from the installer. My insurance picked the installer, since that was a condition of it being warranted by the glass replacement company.

It took about a week to get it shipped to an installer and it is just now being installed tomorrow.

  3. Firestone, one of the manufactures of air bags, has said that for a ping tank to be effective the connecting tubing needs to be at least 3/4 inch id or larger. The problem is that the port on the rv size airbags is usually 3/8 or 1/2 inch. I have installed ping tanks with 1/2 inch tubing on my Tuthill 1050 IFS with no noticeable improvement in ride. I would have to machine the end plate of the bag to except a larger fitting.

Source Engr says their kit used 5/8" air line.

  4. Last trip my cruise control was working. Yesterday left on a trip and could not get the cruise control to engage.

Light on instrument panel did not come on, did not hold speed.

I can't get to my Spartan CD with the fuse data.

Does anyone know if there is a fuse for the cruise control?

    Thanks in advance.

    Mike

The Cruise Control WILL NOT operate if you have Exhaust Brake engaged...if you have it.

  5. Hello folks,

This weekend the family and I went out for a short trip to one of Florida's beautiful beaches. While there I noticed that the rear of my coach wasn't dropping quite as low as the one 2 spaces down. I guess I never noticed it before but since we had the mother in law along she mentioned that it seemed to be a big step to get up in the door. As I looked and had a conversation with Mike (didn't catch his last name) it seems he had a '98 American Tradition while mine is a '99 we came to the conclusion that there wasn't much of a difference in the two. As we spoke I asked him why his coach set lower than mine He said that he allowed all of the air to dump prior to leveling. Basically he said he turned on the leveling system and the air dumped from all 4 bags (front & Rear) so we tried the same with mine and it looks like the front does release but the rear never sets down so when I try to level the coach the front jack extends what seems to be fully. (Which leaves my first step about 12 or more inches (his was about 6 or so) off the ground.)

I guess my question or questions are:

    # 1 which is normal and I guess if mine is incorrect

    # 2 what would be a possible fix?

    Thanks for any help.

I have the same issue with my 2006 Monaco Cayman......so I am interested in what the 'experts' have to say also.

  6. I have driven that road a lot of times in the last 40 years - in a car or pickup truck. We lived in Grand Junction CO for 12 years and have been coming back to visit family for the last eight full timing years.

I have seen RV Y on the road, not a lot but some.

Although I have done a lot of mountain driving with my motor homes I would not drive that road in one.

Could I do it? Sure, but I would not enjoy it. There are 5 mph switch backs, the road is narrow, there are no guard rails.

I would rather take a different route.

WOW !! You have the most experience to date on the road and from the vantage point of an experienced RVer. I will reconsider driving it in the RV. The problem is how do I get to Grand Junction or Denver without driving it?

  7. I have an 07 Monaco Cayman...the first trip we took the coach was very hard to handle and it was a very hard ride. Took it back to the dealer who said everything was fine. Finally took it to a truck shop and they discovered the one trailing arm was broken. Upon further investigation we discovered that there was a recall on this. Once everything was fixed, the coach handled much better.

Did Monaco honor the 'Recall' on the trailing arms and replace them or did you have it done at a local shop at your expense?

  8. We had awful smell inside .

First, I installed one of those "shark fins" in roof vent, it helped but still too much smell.

Last winter valve froze and broke on commode and installed a new one which required removing commode. There was no wax ring, only a rubber gasket, thinking that odd but reinstalled it as found.

While traveling this summer I decided to install wax ring any way, pretty well took care of everything. It did not fit but the wax is easy to mold, just no fun.

We put 10# of ice cubes and about 5 gal of water in a 52 gal tank and drove down the highway for several hours....BINGO...the odor is now very manageable. When I dump the next morning, to check what might be coming thru the view tube, I was AMAZED at what the ice cubes broke lose!

  9. Brett; excellent points! I have driven our Fifth Wheel with a Chevy 3500 DuraMax and 5 speed Allison on some 8% and did use the transmission a lot. The Chevy unfortunately didn't have Exhaust Braking. I had control of the decent with the transmission. I also tried the cruise control and it worked well on some of the hills on the Parkway in the Shenandoah Valley.

Do you know what the grades are on Hwy 550?

  10. Ron, I'm headed in that direction In September. If you go before then, please give a report here on the forum about your experience. Sounds like it would be worth a side trip.

We are currently set up to leave on Sept 6.....so we will be doing the Million Dollar Hwy on or about Sept 27. I don't think the 'winter weather' will be an issue, but it is getting late in the season!

  11. We are planning a trip to Utah and other places in the area. Has anyone driven Hwy 550, the Million Dollar highway? Is is dangerous in a motorcoach? The road looks like it could be very curvey and no guard rails? Are there camping sites between Durango and Grand Junction? How long is the drive, assuming it is as curvey as it looks? Is there an easy way to visit Telluride from Hwy 550?

  12. Thanks for the 'threads'. I had seen them earlier and they are possible issues. I will investigate the arm issue.

I run 100 psi, on what I believe is the mfg suggested pressure.

I seem to have the greatest issues with the front end, not the rear.

  13. I just purchased a 2006 Monaco Cayman with 6500 miles. I took it on our first trip and it was a driving nightmare on concrete roads with 'potholes' etc. When I hit bad places, it literally hit so hard and solid that the DVD player in the upper storage cabinet would bounce up and down so bad it would shift and fall back into the cabinet. This kind of HARD hitting ride occurred on all the 'potholes'.

The other related issue is that I don't get any air release and lowering of the coach when I press the 'Air Dump' switch.

So, I think I have a problem. Anyone have any observations or suggestions

    Ron
