  1. My name is Nick. I work on the new 6T30/40/45/50 fwd 6 speeds at General Motors within transmission development. In particular, I'm in charge of validation for dinghy towing.

I'm after some feedback, regardless of vehicle make, about the vehicle you currently dinghy tow (or have towed in the past).

    1. How many miles do you typically dinghy tow your vehicle yearly? 20,000 plus

    2. What is the total tow mileage you have on your vehicle now? 27,000

    3. What is the total tow mileage you expect to put on the vehicle before you upgrade to a new vehicle? 100,000

    4. When towing, what is the average amount of time between stops? (be it restroom or fuel)? 2 to 3 Hours

    5. How often do you stop for a period of 10 min or more? (be it restroom, stretch, eat, fuel)? One

    6. What is your preferred cruising speed? 60

    7. Do you use a rock shield? Of Course

    8. Where does the rock shield mount (bumper, towbar, dinghy, or... so what type)? Over the tow bar----It's the Tow Defender from Roadmaster

I tow a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the Unified Brake Syatem from UCS Gear. Less than 5 minutes to set up and get on the road

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated, which will help me better tune our internal testing requirements to better meet and exceed actual customer usage.

  2. Well, I bought one. Since it seems like I'm the only one who has taken that leap, I'll update this post after I've pulled it for a while. It's close to the hitch weight of the rig but as far as I'm concerned that should be no big deal. I'm not concerned about the gas milage while towing. My M/H with the Banks System and Ultra Chip has plenty of power.

  3. An additional concern is the towing capacity rating of your chassis/coach.

Remember, the weakest link dictates. That may or may not be the hitch. Transmission, brakes, frame extensions, etc may lower the ratings.

It's a 2008 38' Winni Voyage on a Workhorse with a 8.1 engine and a 6 speed Allison tranny so I'm not the least bit concerned about the things you mentioned. Also it has the Roadmaster All Terrain towbar that's rated at 8k lbs if I remember right. I do appreciate the input

  4. I don't think this point was missed at all. Just as my gallon of milk has not changed, nothing says that facilities need to change to justify an increased cost to the end user. Some folks get cost of living increases and some don't. If can't change that. Despite this fact, the cost of doing business continues to increase and that cost must be passed on in some form. The theory is that everyone should just pay higher taxes so you can get the same service for the same price. I happen to disagree. I suspect that the gas and groceries you buy at the PX or Commissary cost more today than they did 3 years ago (last year). Did you make the same complaint to the post commander that you are not happy about having to pay these higher prices?

MWR is a self sustaining organization. The money earned by the activites are what supports them. No tax money is used.Next you'll ask what MWR stands for. And don't forget, we pay taxes just like you do.

And now, Enough SAID! As you indicated, you did NOT serve!

  5. I think a point that is being missed here is that the rates are increasing but the facilites are remaining the same, with no upgrades. Even a publication of planned upgrades could justify a $1 a day increase, or more if the upgrades are substantial. It would be very interesting to have a breakdown of where the finances are going.

    Enough.

Thanks Wayne. I agree. It seems as tho no one can voice their opinion without someone getting excited and ticked off. Look what happened in the iRV2 forum. And I thought this one was for Vet's but I guess I was mistaken. Are you at Nellis?

  6. Now, while nearly everyone on both sides of my family are current or retired Army/Navy officers, I am the black sheep of the family. Personally, I don't believe in the "I'm Military, every thing should be given to me." I am ABSOLUTELY humbled by those who do serve and I will support our troops to my dying day. I simply could not do what you folks do, so thank God for you. At the same time, you may have noticed that this Country is broke!! The National Debt can NEVER be repaid at our current rate of spending. Something has to give.

I really have never met anyone who feels that just because they are or were in the Military that they should be given a free ride.I spent 22 years in the Army. More time that I care to remember during the Cold War on the Border in Germany-------a year in combat in Nam, and the training and time spent away from my family. Anyone who hasn't served has no idea what we in the Armed Forces go thru. It's kinda like a blank check made out to Uncle Sam for everything up to and including our lives. So in a nutshell, we have earned what we have. It has not been given to us.

As far as your comment about the country being broke, I voted! Did you?

  7. Yep, the price of my gallon of milk has been going up and up and yet I still only get a gallon. I guess I could stop buying milk but I will write it off to inflation instead.

My response to that is that this is a Military installation and the is an activity that is provided for eligible personnel, be they active duty or retired military. For retirees, it is one of the benifits that We have earned. As far as inflation, again this is a military installation------so that's not even an issue.

My next question is, are you elgible to use military campgrounds and, if so, how many have you visited?

  8. They've done it again. For the past 3 years, the rate has been increased by a dollar a day. But this year there is a new twist. In the past, a club member would receive a 10% discount, this year it was cut to 5%. There has been no change in services or improvements to the campground. So now we're at $21 dollars a day minus 5%. If history is any indication, we'll just be paying more for and receiving the same thing. It seems like the same old MWR ploy of taking a money making facility and bleeding it to support those that are in the hole.

I'm sure that some one will say, "If ya don't like it, stay away." That's an outstanding idea, I must admit!

  9. Go to the Steer Safe Web site and check them out. It's a simple and very effective system. Inexpensive too!

I can go down the road in the wind and drive with one hand and a cup of coffee in the other------of course I don't do that all the time! I've driven as much as 500 miles in a day and haven't been tired. This is the 2nd rig I've installed it on

  10. I had the Ford V-10 on my 2000 Winni Adventurer. It would wander and sway in the wind. When a 18 wheeler passed, it was really noticable. I had the Steer Safe system installed. What a difference! It is simple and not expensive. You can go to their website for more info.

I had it installed on my Voyage with a Workhorse Chassis after the first trip out Wouldn't leave home without it!

  11. I don't know about you, but when we "upgraded" to this level of membership, I was told that I would have far more advantages than with the normal membership. Well, it seems as though there is one that they failed to include. I inquired about Wi-Fi at Ponderosa Falls. I was told $1 a day even though I have the Platinum. That seemed a bit strange. I called Fife and talked to Kevin. He told me that everyone pays for that service and that I was the first to complain. It's more the principle than the money, as far as I'm concerned.

If you agree, please call that guy and let him know that there is more than one member who does not agree with that charge.

  12. Great advice Tom but when you pull into a place that has none of the indicators that you mentioned, you have to rely on the campground management. When they don't make you aware of potential danger, you're kinda in a bad situation. When we went to bed at around 2300 that nite, there was no standing water. In the morning, a fast running river. So the evasive action was "making like a boat"!

  13. Finhawk, Glad you made it out, hope there was no damage. Happy to hear that someone came around to let everyone know what was goig on.

I thought it was touch and go for a while. What disturbed me was that the water was about 2' deep before anyone was alerted. Especially when the fire department had asked the management to monitor the situation throughout the nite.

I have creases on both sides of the motorhome----one side where I got a plastic fence on the way out-----trying to see thru a rain covered mirror does not work. The other side where one of the 8'X8' wood platforms that were used as patios came floating by and kissed it
