Legal Residence

Recommended Posts

I have been reading about chosing a home base and everywhere it saying you must have a fixed address in order to get a license, vote, regisiter vehciles etc.

If your home is your Motorhome how do you establish the address needed? Nothing I have read covers it.

Thanks for any clarity someone can give us.

Bob,

Take a look at this document from Escapees. It should help answer some of your questions. We started fulltiming in November 2011 and had to change our driver license, voter registration, vehicle registration, etc. We had decided to use the Escapees mail forwarding. Your are assigned a physical address and that is our legal address. This worked for us because we were already residents of Texas. It could work for you if you don't mind change your state of residence.

Most, if not all, mail forwarding addresses qualify within their state as a legal address. In our case, when we were full-timers, we used our SBI mail forwarding address for vehicle registration, insurance, tax filing, driver's licenses, and voter's registrations until we purchased our current home. We also filed a form with the Florida county where our address was located that recorded our intent to be Florida residents and carried a copy showing that it had been recorded in Clay county and the date filed. We never needed that copy since not even the county treasurer in our former State and County questioned our residency had changed when they tried to collect taxes on our RV (including a $25 late filing fee and a 50% penalty for not filing at all for 2007) and I explained we no longer were living in Indiana and had Florida plates on the RV.

You can't live in a P.O. Box or P.O. Drawer. Most states have residency requirements and they want to be able to get hold of their citizens. Some are easier to qualify for than others, And being qualified gives you obligations to the state. That is where you want to be careful.

We live in Missouri and use a P.O. Box for all of our addresses on car and MH titles , licenses, insurance, credit cards, taxes, and everything else. Have had no problems for 8 years. We belong to an RV Resort that prohibits us from using their address when we return to Missouri. We winter in South Texas. Eddie Elk.
