Dometic 8500 Retractable Awning

I have a 93 Dutchmen that came with a A&E 8500 awning. I left it open in a storm and man it tore it up. I got everything working again except the retractable part.

I loaded both sides with torsion with the awning open, was this right. It will not roll up by itself.

Can anyone help?

The springs have to be wound when the roller is up. Somewhere about 20 turns. The mfg should have the exact number for your size.
