Roads to Carlsbad and Points North/West

Question

We are headed out west this summer from Florida via I10. On the way, we would like to stop at Carlsbad Caverns and then on to Las Cruces. My trip planner has us take 285 north to Carlsbad. After that it has us go US180/62 to US 375 to get back to I10 and Las Cruces. Is this a good route for a Class A, gas RV?

Also, are campground reservations necessary in July or are parks fairly empty that time of year? Any information about travel in the area is appreciated! Thanks.

The route you listed is really the only practical routing. When you get to 375 you will see some construction work, but it is still better than taking I10 thru El Paso. There is a 5,200 foot "mountain" on 375, but doesn't really present a problem for a Class A. I've taken 375 in both a gas, and a diesel, rig. If Las Cruces is your destination, Hacienda RV Resort is the best in town. It is also a good location for visiting the area.
