  1. We are planning a trip to the North East, up to Maine. Planning on staying...maybe a week at the Nat'l Park. Would prefer that it be during the change of color of the leaves.... So we can enjoy not only what Bal Harbor has to offer, but also Acadia's beautiful colors.

I know it is difficult to predict the exact time of the year, but can someone advice us, Floridians, when would be the best time to go? Mid September? End of September? Maybe October? I've been told that I should make reservations at least six months before.

We don't have a route, yet.... so all comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

  2. Hi Joyce!

We love to go to Turtle Beach Campground, 8862 Midnight Pass Rd, Sarasota, FL34242 (941)-349-3839), www.scgov.net/turtlebeachcampground .

We've been there twice and already made reservations for Memorial Wkd. It is litterally steps away from the beautiful gulf shore. Reservations must be made ahead, as they only have 44 sites and only a few for your size of RV. Depending on how close to the beach you are, it's the fee. Fees run from $32 to $42, full hook-up. Less expensive are State Parks, such as Manatee Springs, west of Gainesville, FL or Anastacia, on the beach, NE FL.

    Enjoy your stay in Florida!

  3. Coming down from the NW, we stayed at the South end of Moab. The campground was OK RV Campground (http://www.okrvpark.com/ phone 435-259-1400). It was clean, everyone very courteous and with Passport America membership, they only charged $18.50 a night with full hookup. There were large rigs and small RV's. From there we went in our tow car to both: Arches and Canyonlands. Moab is a cute town. From there we went to Mesa Verde in Colorado. However, in November we happened to pass by Moab and stayed again for one other night, that much we liked it.

  4. Last October 8th we stopped at Pontchartrain Landing RV Resort in New Orleans on our way back to Florida after a 3 month trip to the NW. Pontchartrain Landing is very close to the French Quarter but not "in" the FQ like another very expensive campground. It is by a levee and has a marina with huge yachts. Clean and nice, with very helpful personnel. As Passport America members, they only charge us half the fee for a Deluxe Pull Thru, we only payed $33.00!

On a humorous note, our 28' Coachmen '04 Concord looked very tiny as it was surrounded by huge rigs!

We highly recommend this campground and will surely visit it again, should we go to NOLA.

  5. Unfortunately, when we purchased last year our 2004 Coachmen (28') Concord, we did not realize the two tanks are quite apart. One is under the sofa slide-out and after we empty it, we have to move forward the m/home to empty the gray water tank that is farther at the back, under the bedroom-slide out. Both "pipes" are sort of "under" the m/h rather than by the edge or the side of the m/h thus they are difficult to reach. We have thought of taking the m/h to someone that can install a large Y and have only one "pipe" to drain!

Has anyone had this "issue" and how have you solved it? We are so frustrated with this that have even thought of changing the m/h for another model...thou $$wise is not exactly the best time to do so.

And BTW, we have not found a good "value book" to learn how much it is worth now-a-days. For 2004 we have only found 25' and one slide Concords!

    Thank you!

  6. Last July we started a long 3-month trip out of Florida, all the way to Glacier and are now in TX, heading back East/SE in our 28' Coachmen/Concord, a B+ RV, with our tow car. It has been a great experience and my husband often asks if we'll get used to living again at our house! Thru the trip, we stay mostly at National/Corp of E/State/Passport America....in that order I research for campgrounds.... Those that are "dry" we plan on no more than a 5-day stay, that is the average max time before emptying the tanks, as we rarely use public showers. So, living at an RV for a week (s)at a time? Why not, we love it!

    Have Fun!

  7. We are on our way to Glacier, from there down to Yellowstone, Gran Tetons and so forth. On your way up, be sure to stop at Moraine Park, at the North West Rockies of Colorado. It is a beautiful park, breathtaking views and if you tow a car, great side trips within the park.

We even went to the Alpine area of the Rockies that have an elevation of over 14,000 ft. Great trails too. We stayed 3 nights.

From there, we went to Cody, Wyoming and stayed at the Absaroka Bay RV Park which is at Cody's entrance on HWY 14-16-20. Nice place, full hook-ups and even free WI-FI. If you like cowboy movies, you'll love the town with Buffalo Bill's huge museum, Old Town, rodeo and gunfighters.

From there, we drove about 6 hrs north to Great Falls, WY. If you like history, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center is very interesting, don't bother driving 20+ min. out of town to the falls. We are staying at ****'s RV Park. The place is nice, everyone helpful, full hook up and free wifi for less than $35/night but very difficult to find. Of course, once you know it is OK....

Hope this little bit helps your planning. Safe Travels and Good Luck!

  8. Bobndorine2,

In reference to your comment: "on to Zion and Bryce Canyon avoiding the road that has the tunnel, and then over to Highway 15", why "avoiding the tunnel" and which road is that?

We are also planning this route, coming down from Yellowstone towards Zion, Bryce and the skywalk at G/Canyon.

    Thank you,

    Jocelynn and Oscar Power/Gainesville/FL

  9. What a coincidence! I came to the FMCA forum looking for comments on CO'S SR50. We will be crossing the state mid August and was looking at maps to see where we should stop between the KS-CO border and Lk Irwin @Crested Butte. We have 4 nights available and I would appreciate suggestions on what areas are more beautiful, (cool in August?) relaxed; what to do or see. Normally we stay at Nat'l, C of E or ST PKs, if available...or even on rest areas (budget!!). I read about Royal Gorge but think that it might be too touristry crowded and expensive, unless it is worth at least a one day visit.

Oh, also, when we arrive at the border we would have been 2 days stopping on the road (dry) and Lk Irwin is also dry camping. Thus, if the campground or area you suggest has electrical hook-up it would be nice, and preferred if there is a connection to fill our water tank somewhere...best! We travel on a 27'Coachmen Concord w/ tow.

    Thank you in advance!!

  10. We too are taking that route, though starting at Florida late July. To make the crossing less boring, we will try to do 3 to max of 5 hr daily drives. Researching I heard of an interesting Amish town south of I-70 (Marion,KY); Cave in Rock ST PK in IL;the Arc in St. Louis, a Madonna shrine in Eureka, MO; buffaloes and a French Boxcar at exit 336 Hays, Ks; Monument Rocks, off SR83, south of Oakley...

Should you go before us, let us know of interesting places to see in that route!

    Safe travels!

  11. Went to Terry Bison RV Park's site and looks very nice...however, too close to Ft Collins, CO where we'll spend the previous week.(Though good for a one day side trip!) We were thinking of driving north towards Glacier on roads 789/287 for about 5 hrs/day... noticed one RV PK on Passport America by the name of Powder River at Kaycee, WY. Anyone heard of it?

Not so good reviews on the internet.... Any others in that area?

Or, we could overnight there and next day go up to Montana and spend 2 days before Glacier... Where?

    Thank you!!!!!!!!

  12. To "celebrate" my retirement this summer, my husband and I plan to visit NW National Parks. Although we live in Florida, we would start out of Denver, CO after visiting family.

    A few questions:

    1) Which route would you suggest is best to visit all these parks? We will have the time!

    2) How many days would you stay/visit/need at each park?

    3) Would September and October be good months to go? (Less crowded?)(Too cold?)

    4) We have a 27' RV and will be towing a Hyundai Elantra.

    On campgrounds:

    1) First choice: to use the senior discounts at Nat'l campgrounds, 2nd. State parks' CG's, 3d. whatever is available and reasonably priced.

    2) I've read most are dry cg's, with drinking water. Can one "hook up" to the drinking water to fill the RV tank for a few minutes?

    Any other advice?

    Thanks!
