    Sam,

We need your help here.  It is difficult for those who have been to multiple Conventions/Rallies to know what needs to be covered in the First Timer's Orientation.

If you recall, what WAS covered.

And, much, much more critically; having just attended your first Convention/Rally, what SHOULD have been covered.  Said differently, what would have helped you to have a more productive/fun first Convention/Rally.

Please take your time with this-- it is an important "homework assignment".

    Thanks in advance.

How to find your vendor may be a good item. I ran across a few people who were looking for a particular vendor and couldn't  find them.

    Thanks Herman,

Unfortunately, due to my wife's health, I'm not able to leave her much and go volunteering.  I'm sure it makes for a better experience.  But on the other hand, I'm probably one of the "ole grouches" you mentioned anyway, so it might work out best for everyone.

Please don't misunderstand my comments.  I had a great time and will come back when it returns to Perry.  But you don't need to know about the parts that went right.  So I ask that you look at the below "***** list" and remember, I thought 95% of the rally was great.  The volunteers and members I dealt with were friendly, helpful and very personable.  I got a lot out of most of the seminars I went to, so don't take this as a dissatisfied person, but rather one trying to provide feedback to "tweak" future rallies....

I guess that, along with the inbound traffic, which according to Jeff, was a fluke, it was the "First Timers" tag....what exactly was supposed to happen if you were a first timer?  The only thing that I saw that was different for us was the initial "First Timer's Orientation" and I have to say, that was disappointing.  Maybe I just missed it, but I didn't hear a thing that wasn't in the paperwork we received before the Rally.  What, if anything, did a "First Timer's" tag mean or do?

We also had an electrical problem in the lot when we got there.  And a number of coaches didn't get power (in the second 30-amp lot) until evening.

Oh, and Murphy did come out and take my schedule and beat it to death.  There were three big subjects I wanted to attend and it was impossible to get to see all three.  Course, I guess that's reason to attend the next one.

Sorry for all the gripes, but since you asked, I figured you wanted feedback.
    Sam

Unless they had a generator problem the power should have been on.  I don't have the rally manual with me but it does state what time the generators are to be started to provide power for your lot. Apologies for that one.

Past posters already stated the first timer ribbons (some don't like them) are meant to alert volunteers (and others).  For me at the corner I would give more detailed instructions on what happens next.  Also, appreciate the feedback on the orientation.  In the past people would say it took them too long to figure out the trams so we tried to have more info on tram routes.

The easiest way to make the rallys smoother and more enjoyable is for all to listen to the feedback and for that we thank you!!

Thanks for telling me this story Jeff.  We were one of the forty-six that had to wait awhile; fortunately (at least for us), we were in the first group to go to the new lot.  Later in the afternoon, I saw that line and my wait just didn't seem too bad anymore.  I wasn't angry with the volunteers as I was the lack of organization (or so it appeared).  We had no information about the loss of a team or an injury, so it just appeared as if this was the "system" in place.  I really felt sorry for some of the volunteers; they were working really hard, but you could tell they were frustrated.  I'm glad to know that we were the exception rather than the rule.  My only suggestion for future rallies would be improved signage on the way in.

Signage was part of the delay too.  Everyone was supposed to come in Elko Road (east gate). Elko road was not marked ( I heard HALE was responsible for this). The north gate (wrong entry gate) had a big lit up sign Welcoming FMCA. The south gate (wrong gate unless you were in a caravan) had no sign pointing you straight towards Elko road.  As a result we had coaches approaching the main corner from three directions. Knowing what we know now it won't happen again.

The lack of one parking crew caused the back up but the lack of signage caused many an arrival frustration as people missed Elko road and had to turn around.

Thanks for coming. We will do better next time.

  7. So, what did folks think of the convention this year? I was there and thought it was pretty darn good, and the seminars were some of the best I've attended. I couldn't tell how attendance ranked versus other conventions. The weather turned out to be great (contrary to forecasts) and the only difficulty I encountered was that getting in on Wednesday was a bit more than I expected (it took an hour and a half from arrival to getting to an electric spot). (I also know everything is run by volunteers, and since I wasn't one () I don't get to complain.)

I missed the forum meet-and-greet, but did attend the Military Veterans Chapter meeting (dinner was great) and had a great time chatting with other RV'ing hams.

    Other thoughts?

    Hi

I was the guy at the east gate sorting coaches with the floppy orange hat.

The problem was we lacked 4 parkers (one team) on the parking team to open the other 30 amp lot prior to one of the other parking teams finishing the loading of the K lot.

We then had to wait until they moved over to the other 30 amp lot and set up the first row. This resulted in forty six 30 amp coaches ready to move but no parking team to move them. We had 26 in the staging area and another 20 in the two lanes coming in. This caused parking to grind to a halt for a few minutes. We also had an injury in the corner of the inbound lot we had to get an ambulance to.

Anyone have a picture of the sorting corner at the inbound East Gate:?

Next year we will hope to get more parking volunteers and work faster:) Appreciate your patience on the inbound....arrive before noon and avoid the afternoon rush:)

  8. Hi FMCA!

I saw an ad in Family Motor Coaching magazine stating I could order FMCA business cards online here at the club website. I have looked but all I can find is a form that I can print which is the same as the one in the magazine. Is it possible to order online? Or...does the ad need to be changed? It is very likely I am missing the link, would love some information! I have enjoyed my membership in the short time I have had it and even taken advantage of the Michelin advantage program to replace all 6 of my Class A's tires.

    Thanks

    Dave

Support your local FMCA employee buy them here:

They may be a few dollars more but they are much better quality, nice printing and logo.... and look who you support in the process!!

  9. Just curious. We are excited to attend our first FMCA rally. We usually travel with plenty onboard to eat but wondered if there was any food/vendors available at the rally in Perry? Didn't know how much I need to pack for my grill :-) Of course I never run out of wine and red solo cups lol

It would be nice to know what type of food vendors are coming. I didn't see it listed with the other stuff at http://www.fmca.com/conventions-64/perry-2016.html

Maybe there is a list of food vendors (and possibly their menus) available on the site already? I'm sure it's not really easy since the home office would have to wait until food vendors commit and then publish it.

Many already know what food is presented at the Rally's but since 1 in 4 are first time Rally attendees, if we can, we should make it more convenient we should.

It might help the vendors too....currently people may come loaded with food and then see the food available but not purchase. I like helping vendors:)

  10. I have a 2005 Tiffin Phaeton we bought 6 months ago. We have used the generator several times. Have changed all the filters and oil.

On a trip to Missouri I started it and it ran a while with the air on. When the load came off and it idled with no load it seemed to surge up and down. It then cut off calling code 14. Any advice?

Depends on your model ie "hkaj" etc but it's probably this

    http://www.factoryrvsurplus.com/files/RVQD_Operators_Manual.pdf

    INVERTER OVERFREQUENCY FAULT—CODE NO. 14
(Controller not able to regulate to rated frequency)
    Corrective Action:
Reduce the number of connected appliances, especially when air conditioners and

    battery chargers are running

There is also a first timers orientation meeting Wednesday March 16, 2016 3:00pm-4:15pm in Seminar 4 room.

A lot of good information there....be sure to check out the tram routes, where the vendors are etc....if you are a early riser...we are planning on some 7am walks to tour the grounds starting Friday morning weather permitting.

  12. Hi all; I have registered for the convention in Perry and it will be the first one that we have attended. We've been members since 1993 and finally decided to go to a family reunion. We have received our confirmation package with all the enclosed information. We will report on Wednesday for parking in the 30 amp section.

My question is this: I indicated on the registration that I would like to volunteer and would prefer helping out with parking, safety or security. I noticed that there is a section for parking that is dedicated for volunteers. To date, I have not heard anything about being assigned to volunteer at Perry. Does someone contact those who want to volunteer, or are all the positions filled already. Or, should I just show up early and either go to the holding area or the volunteer parking area.

    Thanks

    Bob

Maxine is the volunteer in charge of volunteers for Perry.

    Contact her at: mschremp2002@yahoo.com

Back in December she said we still need volunteers on two teams, Security and Seminars.

The Security Team arrives on Monday, March 14th and has a meeting on Tuesday, March 15th at 3:00pm in the Beef and Dairy Arena.

The Seminar Team comes in on Tuesday, march 15 and has their meeting on Wednesday, March 16th at 3:00pm in the Beef and Dairy Arena.

The schedules has not been established as yet. I am sure they will be distributed no later than at the meetings for the respective team.

If you do have members that would like to volunteer, I will need their full names, F#, cell number and emailaddress.

  13. Thanks Herman and Jeff. I have been given instructions there is a meeting for the Drivers Ed bunch Sunday night. We'll be given our instructions then. I believe the training originates at the Rally with a couple hours of instruction/safety rules before hitting the parking lot/road. Of course, I am making some assumptions here. Again, thanks.

Have they told you where you will be staying/parking starting Sunday? Just curious. I have not received my package...our mail is on hold until later this week..

  14. We're Newbies arriving at the Perry Rally on Sunday for me/Pat to take the driving lessons offered earlier in the week. Since we are there for the whole week, where is the nearest sani dump if we should need it? Also, coming from north of Perry (Gainesville, GA), preferring to wait until we near Perry to load water. Any suggestions?

I would travel with at least a half tank of water in case you break down somewhere. There is water and a dump on the Perry grounds. Where is the driving taking place from?

  15. We tried to get 50 amps but was told that was reserved for the the people that was working there. I know in the past it was available.

I'd ask again. Doug said 50 amp were available as recent as the 3rd. The web page still shows the 50 amp option too. I've not heard of reserving 50 amp for volunteers but I have been wrong before;)
