  1. We are considering purchasing a used Newmar with the kitchen on the slide (not the refrigerator), this will be our first coach with a slide let alone critical utilities on the slide also. Has anyone seen problems with the gas or water plumbing leaking from being moved back and forth thru the years?

    Thank you

I sure hope not. We just purchased a hardly used MH with the kitchen on a slide. I'd be interested to hear any comments on this issue also.

  2. I installed mine. I removed the power cable from the transfer switch, decided the best location to permanently mount the unit, cut the correct length of cable from the power cable that would be used to go from the unit to the transfer switch, completed the wiring between the unit and the transfer switch and connected the power cord to the unit before I attached the unit to the service bay wall. I found it much easier to work with the heavy gauge wire outside the bay. Installation time was less than an hour.

My point is, anyone with some wiring experience can do the install. If you are near me, north of Houston, I would be happy to help you install it.

BTW...in my opinion, you made a great choice purchasing the Progressive Industries unit.

Jim, I thank you so much for all the info and instruction and your generous offer of help with the install. However, we are many, many miles from Houston or even north of it. :) We are in Ohio. I will pass this along to the DH to see if he is comfortable with the install. Thanks again, and we are so glad we have found this forum.

  3. We were told during our walk thru when we picked up the MH that we could run the furnace while driving. We picked it up in March and didn't turn the furnace on before leaving for home, and as you can imagine (March in Ohio), we were quite cold after the 2hr drive. We plan on heading out next winter in January or February for warmer climates and you can bet the furnace will be running. And we'll be bundled up.

  4. This is the unit we are looking at. 34520 It has a great on sale price, but would like to know if anyone is familar with the TRC brand.

  5. We are going to purchase a surge protector for our coach and wondering about hard wiring it in the coach -vs- a portable one. My question is, where do you hardwire it in the coach? Is it inside the coach? In reading a bit about the protector I have heard there is a hum that comes from it and I don't really want to hear that inside the coach. Can they be hardwired in a storage bay area?

As you can tell, this is all new to us and we have lots of questions that may seem simple to others, but we are very appreciative of the knowledge base we have on here to get answers.

  6. I've done a bit of research regarding price and this RV park, I though it had very reasonable rates compared to the rates I found in the Florida panhandle, beach side. Those were at least $175 per night, without sewer hookup. And then you had to pay extra for them to pump out the holding tanks. Needless to say, we won't be staying there.

Thanks for posting about this park.

  7. Being a totally new motor home owner, I need answers regarding travel and tunnels. Can you take the motor home through the tunnels? We usually go south on 25E through KY and into VA, but have to go through the Cumberland Gap tunnel.

Can we take the motor home through the tunnel? I googled Cumberland Gap tunnel but it did not have any info regarding what vehicles can go through.

  8. Thanks to you all for the great information. Like I said before, it's very good to be able to post a question and you know you're going to get very knowledgeable answers from folks who have been there and still doing it. Thanks again, and please get used to me asking a lot of questions. But I first try and locate a topic that may already have my answers. :) :) :)

  9. We picked up our "new to us" motor-home last week and have been busy cleaning and loading. My question is, when you plug into electric, do you have to engage the "battery disconnect" before it will convert to electric?

We have been camping a lot of years in a travel trailer and when we plugged in to electric, the converter automatically came on. It appears with the motor home we must disconnect the batteries first.

Guess what we are asking is; what is the correct procedure when pulling into a campsite? Or any place we want to run just the electric.

We are sure glad us 'newbies' have someplace to turn to for the answers we need.

  10. I took a look at the towing site, thanks. Then I went online to research towing our 98 Blazer 4WD. This is what I found. Does this seem correct to anyone?

Yes iticon1.png can, just place your Transfer Case in Neutral position.
    Shifting into NEUTRAL
To shift the transfer case to NEUTRAL do the following:

Make sure the vehicleicon1.png is parked so that it will not roll.
    Set the parking brake.
Start the vehicle or turn the ignition to RUN.
Connect the vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
Shift the transfer case to 2HI.
Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and 4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The red NEUTRAL light will come on when the transfer case shift to NEUTRAL is complete.
Shift the transmission to REVERSE ® for one second, then shift the transmission to DRIVE (D) for one second, or FIRST (1) for vehiclesicon1.pngequipped with a manual transmission.
    Turn the ignition to LOCK.
Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P), or FIRST (1) for vehicles with a manual transmission.
Release the parking brake prior to towing.

    Shifting Out of NEUTRAL
    To shift out of NEUTRAL:

Set the parking brake and apply the regular brake pedal.
Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL (N) and turn the ignition to RUN with the engine off.
Press the button for the desired transfer case shift position (2HI, 4HI, AUTO 4WDicon1.png or 4LO).
After the transfer case has shifted out of NEUTRAL the red light will go out.
    Release the parking brake.
You may start the engine and shift the transmission to the desired position.
Excessively shifting the transfer case into or out of the different modes may cause the transfer case to enter the shift protection mode. This will protect the transfer case from possible damage and will only allow the transfer case to respond to one shift per 10 seconds. The transfer case may stay in this mode for up to three minutes.

NEUTRAL: Shift the vehicle's transfer case to NEUTRAL only when towing your vehicle.
Good luck and hope this answers your question.

  11. Thanks to everyone for all the information. We don't know what we're going to tow. We have a 2011 Chevy Equinox and a 98 Blazer (that is near and dear to my heart). My first brand new vehicle that was all mine. I guess we'll need to decide what we are going to do, and then save up for the equipment it takes to pull something. Our coach has a Reese hitch on the back and will pull 5,000lbs from what I've read so far. There goes the gas mileage.

  12. Imsooter, thank you for the information.

I had no idea about having the motorhome weighed once we got it all set up. That is a very good idea, and also thanks for the mileage update.

Ours too has the Ford Triton V10. I will be checking out the website you suggested. There is so much to learn, even though we have been campers with travel trailers since the 70's, motorhomes are a horse of a different color.

    Thanks again.
