  1. I used a Dolly to tow a Toyota Camry and a Nissan Sentra. Really liked both vehicles, but they can not be towed 4 down with auto tranny. The tires on the Dolly had to be replaced twice. The manufacturer indicated if I got 7k miles out of the tires I was doing good. I got 10 k out of them. No shocks, no springs.

I have been towing 4 down with a Jeep Liberty and now a Sonic.

When I was younger and full of P&V, the Dolly was fine, easy for me to use, move around, and could load the car without assistance with practice.

However, the 4 down towing is much easier for me now. I would not go back to a Dolly

  2. I Used the Master Tow 80 w/elect brakes for 3 years with 2 different vehicles. Replaced the tires once. Never used the spare that I bought for it. Nary a problem.

Tires can last 7-10k miles. I discussed w/ factory rep when I visited them in Fayetteville, normal to go through tires, no shocks, ect on the dolly. They are very helpful. I accidentally pulled wires out of plug, called them and they walked me through rewiring. Excellent customer service.

If I ever went back to a Dolly, I would not hesitate going with a Master Tow. At the time, best price available with electric brakes.

When I sold it, put a good price on it, and it went the first day. Fellow drove 300 miles to pick it up.

I was able to load and unload the auto w/o any help or guidance. It worked for me at the time. Now it's 4 down, and as I got older, it is easier. But, when you're young and full of P&V, what the heck, a dolly of whatever mold will always work.

  4. Just obtained quotes for RV = Full-time Coverage. Sold the house last Friday.....Just can't sit still.

Geico Coverage is for both Vehicles.

Geico is $180 less for both the RV & Sonic, which also includes RV E Roadside and Auto E Roadside, compared to Blue Sky for just the RV, .

Blue sky quoted the Sonic at $1216.00, either they made a mistake or they're pistons are not firing in sequence. Interesting quote. If that is an accurate quote, then Geico is $1396 less. No Accidents, No Moving Violations, Excellent Credit.

Geico is over $300 less for both the RV & Sonic compared to Progressive for just the RV.

    Interesting comparison on quotes.

Oh, forgot, the quotes were for less $ amount coverage.

Hmm-mm, let me think? What to do!

This has become a semi-annual ritual, glad I have the time,,,retirement is such a chore. Oh, Well, someone has to,,,you know the rest.

I have had outstanding customer and claim service over the years with both Geico and Progressive. Progressive priced themselves out of my market.

Full time coverage, plus ERS with Geico comes to $1112 per year on 2 semi annual policies.

  5. We have spent time in Ouray the last 2 years which we really enjoy.

    Would like any other suggestions.

    Thanks.

An RV Volunteer may not be for everyone. It is a fun adventure, with plenty of time to explore the area, and contribute to the preservation and protection of America's National Parks.

Do a search for Colorado, 39 Volunteer Announcements for numerous agencies.

  6. My name is Nick. I work on the new 6T30/40/45/50 fwd 6 speeds at General Motors within transmission development. In particular, I'm in charge of validation for dinghy towing.

I'm after some feedback, regardless of vehicle make, about the vehicle you currently dinghy tow (or have towed in the past).

    1. How many miles do you typically dinghy tow your vehicle yearly? 3,000

    2. What is the total tow mileage you have on your vehicle now? 550

    3. What is the total tow mileage you expect to put on the vehicle before you upgrade to a new vehicle? Depends on durability, reliability of the new Sonic

    4. When towing, what is the average amount of time between stops? (be it restroom or fuel)? 30-45 minutes

    5. How often do you stop for a period of 10 min or more? (be it restroom, stretch, eat, fuel)? about every 2 hours

    6. What is your preferred cruising speed? 55 mph

    7. Do you use a rock shield? NO

    8. Where does the rock shield mount (bumper, towbar, dinghy, or... so what type)?

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated, which will help me better tune our internal testing requirements to better meet and exceed actual customer usage.

Bought the 2013 Sonic LTZ, due to it's tow-ability, I was interested in the Cruze, however, it is not tow-able. Considering the Sonic is a subcompact, road noise is minimal except on rougher road surfaces. It tows great. Although, I have not taken the Sonic on a long distance interstate drive, current mileage averages around 29 in town and on state highways.

So far on 3 hour drives, the Sonic has been very comfortable, and fun to drive. I like it more than I thought, however, sometimes I miss the 4 wheel drive Jeep.

The only problem with the Sonic is that the trim on the truck has tarnished, which occurred within the first month. The dealer order the replacement trim in December, and it has yet to arrive.

The Sonic is the first new vehicle I have purchased that has had to be returned to the dealer during the warranty period (although minor)

Prior new purchases of a Jeep, Nissan and 2 Mazda's, never required dealer warranty service.

The Sonic is easy to setup for towing, even with having to remove the DLIS fuse.

I have a question: Is it necessary to remove the DLIS fuse for short towing trips 200-350 miles?

What affect would not removing the DLIS fuse have?

We may consider the Malibu for our next toad. Depends on what's on the market when we are ready for another vehicle.

  7. Here in Wisconsin--high of -6 degrees.

The rattling you here up here isn't from snakes. It's the dentures in the glass in the bathroom!

Spent 7 winters in Minnesota,,,,,The Great Minnesota Lie,,,,You'll get use to it.

All I can say is better your choppers in the glass in Wis than mine,,,,,,,cheer up more winter is just around the corner, then you can have thoughts of Spring.

Keep the heater on in the fish-house, warmest place in Wisconsin.

The first Cowboy Coffee of the Season was a Winner!

Very, very few coffee grounds in the cup, no bitter taste, and the pot emptied out... All good signs that the Cowboy Coffee went down well (pun intended).

Comments: Ranger John Little stated, this is "The best Cowboy Coffee ever"..... As an experienced coffeer,,,have to say, it twern't bad at'all.

Cowgirl Coffee was also blended. The Cowgirls and the not so Cowboy Cowboys, added cocoa to their Cowboy Coffee.

Therefore I will not be hung of is it hanged from the Hang'n Bridge.

The Cowboy Coffee will be repeated next Thursday at 277 North Campground.

  10. Wow, I had never heard of Streets & Trips before ( I looked it up, it looks cool...but I have a Mac). I've been trying to reseach software that might be used for this, not made for it, but adapted to it, and I might try a journaling one. I wish I knew more about how to create an app - I sure see a need out there for this!

Here's a discussion about streets & Trips on Mac

    Good Luck,,,,

  11. I use an HTC Inspire 4g now that we are fulltime again.

I use the Smartphone with an ATT 5g plan $50, and the phone becomes a router for 2 laptops, 2 Kindles, I can connect up to 5 devices if needed.

We do photos, and a lot on internet, and use about 6g a month, which adds an additional $10 for $60, which is what I was paying for my USB Air Card.

We do all banking, etc. through the HTC Hot Spot.

Going on 4 months now, and nary an issue.....No more separate routers or air cards for us.....I like the KISS concept.....

We have not been without a signal where we have stayed. Travelling occasionally, hit a hole. Locations we have stayed are on the below Blog.

Everyone has their own preference, currently the above is ours.

    Good Luck.

  12. Just received the below information regarding Jean Lafitte NHP.

The NHP & Preserve recently completed construction on 2 new RV Volunteer Sites.

    LOUISIANA

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve = 2 Full Hookup pull through RV Volunteer Sites located at Barataria Preserve, additional RV Volunteer Site improvements are planned

RV Volunteer Positions can be applied for through Volunteer.gov RV Volunteer sites may not be available for all positions.

The current Volunteer vacancy announcement may not list the availability of the new RV Volunteer Sites. The Park can be contacted for more specifics. Jean Lafitte NHP

As additional information regarding site improvements and additional RV Volunteer Sites becomes available this thread will be updated.

The picture is of the Barataria Preserve Unit. That's the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which is definitely big, but is dwarfed by the Mississippi itself. The barge tows are bigger, and the river can also handle huge cruise ships, container ships, and bulk shipping.

  13. I have gotten into the habit of double checking the locking caps on my Blue Ox locking pins when hooking up.

Recently, for some reason after hooking up, I rechecked the locking pins, and found one locking cap that I must not have put enough pressure on and it was not fully seated on the locking pin.

Although it appeared locked, and I believed I had locked the cap on the pin, it wasn't, and would have fallen off.

All locking pins get double checked after hooking up the toad.
