leroyschim@gmail.com Report post Posted May 13, 2009 I have a 50-amp cord on my RV. I was told that if I go to a campground that has only 30-amp service, I will use more electric than if I had 50-amp. True or false?
bernie@dobrin.com Report post Posted May 13, 2009 Leroy Whoever told you that needs to do a little better research. First, you will need a 30-50 amp converter plug so that you can plug into the 30A connections with your 50A plug. Now that you have a 30A connection, you will be limited to 30A service and won't be using any more electric than if you had 30A service. But why the worry -- you aren't paying for electric anyway, unless you are on a monthly rental.

tbutler Report post Posted May 13, 2009 Leroy, Be aware that if you plug in on a 30 amp connection, not everything in your coach will be able to work at the same time! You can use the electric water heater and maybe an air conditioner but if you want to use the microwave you'll have to shut off the water heater or the air conditioner. You might be able to use 2 air conditioners but don't try to use the hot water heater at the same time. Your limit will be 30 amps no matter what your power card is capable of carrying. That said, we stay at parks that have just 30 amp electric all the time. Our coach has a regulator system that will shut down appliances if we approach the 30 amp limit so we don't blow the circuit breaker. Without this feature, we would be outside resetting the breaker every time we switched on one to many appliance. If we need two air conditioners, we will try to get 50 amps because there is always the microwave, coffee pot, washing machine and drier and the hot water heater that need electric, not to mention the TV, etc., etc.! garykd Report post Posted May 14, 2009 Hi Leroy, You will use no more electric on 30 AMP than on 50 AMP service. You will, most likely, use less electric on 30 AMP. The bottom line to remember is that a 50 AMP service really provides your coach 100 AMPS. It is 50 AMPS on each leg of the two power legs. With 30 AMP service that is all you get, 30 AMPS. This is why the preceding posts warn about using too much power and popping the CG pedestal circuit breaker. It you are on a 30 AMP site, consider using propane for the power source for all appliances that can use propane. Depending on your coach, this might be the hot water heater, refrigerator and furnace.
