Generator Problem

Recommended Posts

Onan generator in 1997 Bounder.

Will start fine but only run for about 20 minutes and then flood out. My husband has tried pinching off the gas line and it will continue to run but then he has to open the line again, and then pinch it again. Not very relaxing. Anybody got suggestions about what could be the issue?

Sounds like the float or the needle and seat are dirty or out of ajustment. Carburetor needs to be cleaned and repaired. This work could be done at a Small Engine repair shop.

One needs information off the engine, like make, model and serial number for the service shop, so they can order the required parts.

With the generators being hard to remove for repair ,the shop might be able to just remover the carburetor to repair it. The carburetor will need to be adjusted for proper operation once its been installed again.

Most of these kind of problems are caused by not running the generator enough. They should be run monthly for a minimum of 45 minutes under 50% load.

If not run enough, gasoline evaporates in the carburetor and gums it up. It also allows moisture to degrade the electrical part of the generator.

If you can't run it monthly, use Stabil in the gasoline to reduce carburetor issues.

Gen-Sets (especially diesel) should be run as often as possible and under load. Most people think that low gen-set hours are a selling point, but the opposite is true. I would not buy a used coach (especially diesel) with too few hours on either the coach or gen-set for the age of the unit.
