Western Trip

We are planning a western trip in 2014 from FL to Southern CA (Palm Springs) then North thru CA.

Some areas of interest so far are Disneyland, Santa Barbra, Hearst Castle, Napa wine country,and Sacramento.From CA we will travel thru Oregon seeing Crater Lake and Mt Hood up to Seattle Washington.

From here we will turn east towards Glacier Park then south to Yellowstone. The next destination will be Las Vegas then Parump to join a FMCA caravan to tour the National Parks and on to Albuquerque, NM for the balloon festival in October.

Our target for Palm Springs will be the beginning of June. What we need are some good routes up CA and into Seattle and then over to Glacier Park and Yellowstone. Haven't had much mt driving and we pretty much stay on interstates when traveling. We will be traveling in a 40ft motorhome and towing a car.

We are open to suggestions for everything - attractions, campsites, and routes. We are Thousand Trails and Good Sam members.

There are quite a few Thousand Trails parks in Ca, Or, Wa. I like the ones on the ocean. There are 6 on the Or coast and Wa coast that are our favorites. We will be going there this summer and spend 2 to 3 weeks at each.

I would take Hwy 101 north from LA to Pismo Beach, CA, stay at Pismo Coast Village RV park. This puts you in easy driving distance of Hearst Castle and Morro Bay, and only an hour north of Santa Barbara. I would then Go north to Paso Robles and take Hwy 41/46 to I-5 and avoid the Bay Area. You can get to the wine country using hwy 20 between I-5 and Hwy 101 or just stay on I-5. Great RV parks in Northern CA include Benbow on 101 or several in Redding on I-5. In Oregon there are many great parks, including 7 Feathers RV in central Oregon, the Mill Casino RV park in Coos Bay, Outdoor Resorts in Newport. The Coast Road (101) in Oregon is really a decent road in an RV, but the Northern CA 101 is not so good.

North of LA be sure to spend a day at the Ronald Reagan library. Don't go north of San Simion on # 1. From the Wine Country go up #101 through the redwoods.

When in Albuquerque be sure to go to Bandalier and both museums in Los Alamos....also the center of Santa Fe where you can see the famous staircase at the old church. There are so many things to see in the country that are off the main freeways so turn off and stop at the little towns.

You'll be covering a lot of beautiful territory along the California coastline. The trip from Palm Springs to the coast takes you through Los Angeles, so you might want to time your drive to avoid the daily traffic jams. The Malibu Beach RV Park in Malibu is directly across the street from the ocean and has fabulous views and a nice restaurant/fish market within walking distance.

Further north, about 40 miles north of Santa Barbara, we love the Ocean Mesa RV Park near El Capitan State Beach. It is very clean and has wonderful scenery and views. From there, it's not far to San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Those are you best bets south of Hearst Castle. We usually leave the toad in Morro Bay and make a day trip to Hearst Castle.

North from Morro Bay, Highway 1 along the coast presents very tight curves, construction, bridge repairs, etc. We would NOT recommend it for your size coach. Also, there is almost nowhere to park or stay in the Big Sur Area. We simply head inland from Morro Bay and take Highway 101 up to Monterrey. From there, the coast road is again workable for your size coach. Just South of San Francisco there a few places on the water. One is San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica CA. Its all paved, but its literally right above the waves. There is a train station nearby so you can get into San Francisco easily and cheaply.

North of San Francisco, you'll find lots of good options at Bodega Bay. Dorian Regional Park has sites for any length and has good facilities , so does Westside Regional Park.

We haven't explored north from there yet (but will be doing so in July). I hope this helps and that you have a great trip.

We did a similar trip this year. Don't miss Redwoods NP and the Oregon coast. We live in Florida and it is so much more beautiful there. We also did 13 days in Yellowstone/Grand Teton ... could have allowed more time.
