Skyline Drive

Has anyone driven the Skyline Drive with their motorhome? We are concerned about getting through the tunnel that is near Thornton Gap. It is listed as being 12'8'. That gives us about 5" clearance! We are considering renting a car since we do not tow.

Any suggestions on campgrounds and things to do and see in the Shenandoah National Park would be appreciated as well.

I would call the park service and see if that clearance is on the side, or riding the middle line.

Tunnel clearance is missleading as the tunnel is arched and posted clearance is not in the middle, I have seen large RV's travel through it but we opted not to try in in our 40 ft HR that tops out at 13'5. Easy entrance is at Swift Run Gap (MP65 or so) near Harrisonburg or if comming from further south the entrance off I- 64 at Rockfish Gap (MP96). Traveling north to Big Meadows at Mp 50 is best bet for camping. Campground can handle largest of coaches. Travel along the drive in RV is not a problem as speeds are low and large trucks service the lodges at Big Meadows and Skyland which seems to help keep overhead branches clear. Great overlooks of valleys both on east and west sides of drive. Most popular areas are between tunnel and Swift Run son not too big a deal if you can't clear the tunnel. Restaraunt at Big Meadows is a bit better than the one at skyland. hiking to Soney Man Mountain, Hawksbill and Dark Hollow Falls are a must. Spend time watching wildlife in the Meadows. Black bear sitings are common so food storage precautions are in affect. No hook ups but water is generally close. Campstore is also avilable at Waystation next to vistors center. Good starting point for overview and history of the park. Enjoy!!

I have been wanting to visit this park, as it is close to home. thanks for the input on the bridge, i was hoping to be able to travel the park in the motor home.

We've drivern the majority of the Blue Ridge Parkway in our Class C without any problem. Bridges weren't an issue and the Park Servicee campground we stayed in Last September was very nice. No services, but the tenters were assigned to a different secttion and there weren't any other MHs, or TTs the night we were there. Ran the genset for cooling till sundown as it was pretty warm in the afternoon.

We were greeted in the morning by two beautiful deer foraging about 15 feet away....our 65 pound Portuguese Water Dog didn't know what to do, so he just barked like the devil and kept backing up. The deer weren't upset at all. What a beautiful place. Very much want to go back.

Our trip took us from the Fancy Gap, VA area, I believe, to about Asheville, NC. Still want to finish it and do the Trace from TN to MS.
