8.1 L "Service Engine Soon"

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 Brave with a 8.1L engine and the "Service Engine Soon" has been on for some time. The cam position sensor has been changed as was indicated, still there. PO341 and PO342 was indicated and checked. Plug wires were suggested and changed. A learn test to sync the sensors and the light went out, only to return after stopping to refuel the unit.

I am not alone with this problem, my brother in law has the same problem with a 2002 unit.

We still use the MH but the light stays on all the time. We are taking a 3000 mile trip this July and would like to have the problem resolved.

You may want to post this topic on the IRV2.com forum - and look for the Workhorse forum - a lot more users there with the Vortec engine - may have a solution for you - good luck !!

Wisper,

Welcome to the FMCA forum!

The 0341=(Cam shaft error) can be caused by two items, as you have changed the Cam sensor and the Plug wires.

The Crank sensor could be at issue or a bad ground(s) in the coil grounding points where they connect to the cylinder heads.

Remove the coils and clean the bolts the top and bottom of the surface of each hole in the coils, along with the contact surface of the cylinder heads and the coils.

A bad ground will cause a higher then acceptable resistance reading in the PCM (Pulse control module).

Regarding the Crank shaft sensor.

The PCM fires 2 plugs at the same time--- One on the Compression cycle and the one on the exhaust cycle. The different cycles take a different voltage to fire there respective plugs. Bad grounds sensed by the PCM can cause the Service Engine Light.

The 0432 error=(Crank Shaft)There is a recall from the NTSB on the 8.1 L. engines in the 2001 / 2002 time period. The new units hold up better when exposed to the high engine temperatures.

GM will fight you on the warranty replacement, but with all the current recalls, they might work in your favor, as they work to correct other items !!

The FACT that you are getting both the codes, Do a job on all the coils bolts and surfaces first !!!

Good luck and post your results for the group.

Rich.
