Troubleshooting Roof Air Conditioner

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help. All of a sudden our front AC stopped working. We had been out to lunch with friends. When we returned both front and back ACs were working. We turned on a light and TV and the AC quit. Now the Direct TV box and front AC won't work.

We have tried flipping the breaker switch and the GFI reset. The TV works and the back AC works, but the front AC does not work. Unfortunately it is 90 degrees here and we really need both ACs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Pull the cover off the thermostat, pull the fuse for 30 seconds, replace and resume cooling. Most likely RF interference from a fluorescent light.

Lundstrom,

Hope you have resolved the issue with your front A/C. If not please read on.

We had a similar issue with ours last month. Front A/C working fine whilst asleep. Then stopped working once we woke and started our morning routine (coffee & breakfast). Rear A/C no problems.

After reading Jim S post above we started a process of elimination and discovered that one of the ballasts of our fluorescent lighting was the culprit. It wasn't one of the 12v lights but rather a 120v house light that is very near the thermostat. Front A/C has worked fine since then.

I've already started converting the 12v tubes with LED tubes (easy but expensive) and will convert the 120v fixture as soon as we get back to home base. The conversion simply bypasses the ballast. Result is a brighter light and lower heat and electrical consumption.

Jim S......thanks for the tip!

We are newly back to FMCA after several years of inactivity (little use) due to out of state and country work. Now that we are "gainfully unemployed" (retired), we plan to spend much more time on the road and be active members of FMCA again.

Blake, Welcome to the Forum and welcome back to active FMCA.

In your area there are several chapter your area you may like to visit. Our chapter, Lone Star is having a rally just this week in Kerrville at the Guadalupe RV Resort.

We are also having a rally in December at Rayfords Crossing RV park.

If these might peak your interest send me PM (personal message). I can send you the information.
