Cross Country RV Trip

Question

We survived our trip.

We added a few extra stops along the way as we had time. I added links to the camp sites we stayed at just in case anyone is interested.

Pictures and videos posted here. All are from my camera, still need to upload from my wife’s

Started from Lincoln Ca

Hemingway South Carolina to visit my wife’s Brother and his family. We also picked up my Father-in-law who flew into SC from Italy

o Stayed a day to visit and rest. We made it from Lincoln California in 4 days. Very aggressive driving

Virginia Beach – Father-in-law wanted to visit a few friends there

Washington DC – Checked out a number of the Smithsonian museums and local sites

o We stayed at a great RV park called Cherry Hill Park

o City bus came right to the park and took you to the metro line. You could also sign up for 1 day and 2 day tours. We decided to do our own thing and walk around

Gettysburg Pennsylvania – had time so we went and checked out the Gettysburg museum

Hershey Pennsylvania – Couldn’t miss checking out the Hershey chocolate factory and spent a few days at the amusement park

o They had a free shuttle to the Amusement park. Very nice park, we had a spot along a creek and could hear the water at night. Little ray played in the water

Niagara Falls – we went to the Canadian side and took a few tours

o Lots of things for the kids to do and they had an inexpensive shuttle to the falls

Graceland, Nashville Tennessee – had some time so we checked out Elvis’s museum and Mansion

o We just passed through but saw an RV park right next to Graceland

Krum Texas – stayed at my brother’s ranch. Kids had fun playing with all their cousins and riding horses

Grand Canyon Arizona – Pictures do not do the depth of the place at all. You get a little woozy looking over the edge

o We stayed at the GRAND CANYON RAILWAY RV PARK

o We took the train ride into the Grand Canyon. At 2 hrs and 15 minutes it was a little long for the little ones and you only had 3 hours to walk around. We only saw the south rim areas and would have gone to the north side if we had a car.

Las Vegas Nevada – Took a day and walked around Vegas at night. Can’t beat the light show

o Stayed at the Circus Circus RV park

o Basically a parking lot with RV hookups but it was right next to the casino and not too far from the monorail

South Lake Tahoe California – We stayed near the lake to watch the 4th of July fireworks.

o A little rough getting in and out but not too bad. The beach wasn’t too far of a walk across the road.

Back home late afternoon- unpacked, and put the RV to rest

o Total miles ~7,600

Wow, great trip!

From Gettysburg to Niagara, what route did you take? We want to do this next year and I was also curious about border crossing in an RV, was it a hassle?

The Grand Canyon, did you take the train ride from their campground?

We went up through Buffalo across the Peace bridge. Didn't have any issues crossing. They asked for our passport, verified everyone via the picture. Asked a few question about eggs, dairy, fruits and veggies (we didn't have any). Also asked about any personal protection like tasers, gun's, pepper spray etc. The border guard was surprised we didn't have anything. I found that funny.

Yes we did take the train into the Grand Canyon from the Williams station. We stayed the the Grand Canyon Railway RV Park so it was a short walk. They did offer free shuttle service to any location on their property. You just had to call the office and request to be picked up. The train ride is a bout 2hrs and 15 minutes each way so you only get 3 hours to walk around the Grand Canyon. For us that was enough since we had little kids.

Wow you had a fast and full trip. My cousin lives in Auburn so I am familiar with the area. Glad you had a safe trip and had a good time.

You can ride the shuttles that circulate around in the park at the Canyon for free. They will take you along the rim west to see other look outs and features.

We also went to the Grand Canyon this past spring (May). Stayed at the Grand Canyon Railway Park on the PA discount. Drove up to the South Rim and saw the canyon as very few get to see it --- filled with clouds! If interested, I posted a photo album at http://dbsafford.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=5. Just one of the 9 national parks we visited on our 6 1/2 week excursion.

Welcome to the forum. Nice pictures. Being at higher elevation's will get you cooler weather. Last Summer in July we were in Phoenix and it was 113 but up in Flagstaff the high was 72. Left for Flagstaff the next day.
