Florida Recommendations? Winter 09

We have been fulltiming for one year, spending this winter in S. Texas and Arizona. We would like to try Florida next year and need some recommendations.

We would prefer the s/w area within short drive from beaches. Activities are a plus.

Looking for something around $900/mo for 3 months.

Would anyone like to share their recommendations?

Charlie,As an alternative to the SW Florida area, you might consider The Great Outdoors (TGO).  We are located in Titusville, in the East-Central Florida area, near the Kennedy Space Center.  Cape Canaveral National Seashore is about 20 minutes away, and Cocoa Beach (and Ron Jon's Surf Shop) is about 25 minutes.  A big advantage of this area is that traffic is light in the northern end of Brevard County, so most travels out and about are easy (e.g. to Wal-Mart).  We find that even Cocoa, COcoa Beach, Melbourne and the like are far less congested than the west coast.

TGO is an RV community. gated and guarded, with typical RV amenities available - pool, laundry, golf (fee), daily trash pickup, etc.  All 1,600 sites are individually owned.  The most basic sites have concret pads with full hookups (50A and cable); the upper end have $1M houses with RV garages.  Individual sites are rented either directly by owners or through TGO Realty (go to www.tgoresort.com).

Current seasonal monthly rates through TGO Realty are a little higher than you requested ($1,150). Individual owners often rent for less but unfortunately you do have to be here to get their contact information so it only really works for someone who is not a first-timer to TGO.  RV houses ("resort homes") rarely are rented, but park models and villas often are available.

Our first trip to Florida and we found a nice campground called Lucky Clover in Melbourne just south of space center. You can check out their web page. Very close to beach and shopping. All friendly people. We can use help as well. Next year we are off to the South Texas area. We can use names of decent campgrounds there.

We have wintered in south Texas for the last eight winters. While we have been at one park the whole eight years, we have traveled all over the valley. There are hundreds of parks in the Rio Grande Valley with every range of services and type of location. There is a state park at the southern tip of South Padre Island with full RV hook-ups if what you want is seaside residence, you can't beat this one. You can drive the beach in places and fish most anywhere. There are plenty of sea food restaurants and during spring break things get real interesting. There are landlocked parks further inland with every range of service from large dance halls where you can practice your Texas two step or other dance steps, to locations next to wildlife parks. Some parks have lots of activities and others are just places to hang out. Some parks have paved parking spots, some have grass spots. You can find RV parks at golf courses and RV parks next to flea markets. Throughout the "valley" as it is known, you will find excellent authentic Mexican food, Texas BBQ and seafood. Our winter temperatures seldom reach the freezing mark and we seldom have a week that we don't see some temperatures near 70 degrees for at least a little while. So when you ask for a decent campground, just what do you mean? I'm betting we can find one for you!

It will be hard to find too many places for $900/month in SW Florida and with a reasonable drive to the beach. The farther south you go - the higher the rates. We like the Sarasota and Fort Myers - there are several smaller parks in both areas that may meet your needs. I can't give any names, since we always stay at Sun-N-Fun in Sarasota or Cypress Woods in Fort Myers - they are both higher than $900 in the winter season.
