“Exercise” for Class A on longer stays?
rpbuttery replied to rpbuttery's topic in General Discussion
👍 Thanks. -
For the first time since we have been RVing, our 2018 six-month trip will include three stays of one month each. When at home in Florida for the winter, we take our 2011 Allegro Open Road RED out of storage for monthly “exercise”: a two hour drive; run the generator under load; extend the leveling jacks; and extend the slide-outs. Are any special motorhome maintenance or operating procedures suggested while a motorhome is parked and being used during a stay of a month or longer?

I have an electric or gas, or both, hot water heater, but normally run it on electricity since we rarely boondocks. Is it better for the water heater (less wear and tear) to turn it off when not being used or needed, or to leave it on all the time? Thanks.

My wife and I are both on traditional Medicare, with supplemental AARP UnitedHealthcare Part B and Part D. We will be in Canada four months this summer (2017). Would appreciate any views regarding foreign medical insurance for such an extended stay in Canada.

The air compressor on my 2011 Allegro Open Road RED struggles to air the tires up above 95 PSI--maximum 100 PSI--even though both air pressure gauges show pressure in excess of 137 pounds. My RV tech says this is normal; that I'll have to go to a truck stop to find an air compressor with the capacity to air above that. Any differing thoughts?

Thanks. Any suggestions as far as brand for a cleaner/sealant?

My 2011 Allegro Open Road RED fibreglass roof is oxidized (chalky to the touch). Is there a preferred method of cleaning and resealing a fibreglass motorhome roof? A preferred sealant/wax brand?

Thanks to all.

The topper on the 20 foot slide on my 2011 Allegro Open Road RED fills with water during rain, and sags badly (it doesn't run off until the slide is retracted). The other three slides (all shorter) are taut enough to shed the rain water. Is this a common issue, or does my topper need replacement?

Thanks for the info, folks. Does the level of DEF in DEF tank matter in storage?
-
I store my 2011 Allegro Open Road RED in Central Florida for six months during late Fall/Winter/early Spring. I know the diesel fuel tank should be stored full. What about the DEF tank and the LP gas tank? Does it matter if they are full? I take the motorhome out for an hour or so spin once a month, and run the generator with the air conditioners on at the same time. Is a fungicide necessary in the diesel fuel tank?

This is a picture of my inverter right after starting the generator to recharge my house batteries, and both the air conditioners on, in my 2011 Allegro Open Road RED. Generator is 8,000 watt, and inverter is a new (replacement) 2,500 watt. Can someone interpret what the inverter read-out screen means, please?

Regarding my 2011 Allegro Open Road RED-- Water pump worked fine this morning. Stopped for lunch, and it wouldn't work--none of the three rocker-type "red" light pump switches will turn on. The pump motor doesn't run, even if the switches are held in the on position. Oddly, the pump switch red light on-indicators glow faintly, both on and off city water, but go off for about a minute when a water outlet is opened (faucets or toilet)? Any thoughts?

My coach is 50 AMP. Staying at a park site that has both 30 AMP and 50 AMP breakers, but only a 30 AMP receptacle. Manager assures me the 50 AMP breaker delivers 50 AMP service to the 30 AMP receptacle, and there's no problem in doing that using a 50/30 dogbone. Not knowing squat about electrical matters, and being a do no harm kind of guy, I'm just using the 30 AMP, but am curious, is he right?

Thanks, Manholt and mjrij. It is the overflow for water tank. Both my front and rear A/C units must drain to rear. ?
-
Regarding a 2011 Allegro Open Road RED. Most of the time, I have water dripping at the rear of the coach on the passenger side when the air conditioners are running. But once in a while, significant amounts of water drip from a drain at mid-coach on the passenger side. Is that also an air conditioner drain? The mid-coach drain is obviously a water drain of some sort because it has a rubber self-closing "taco" on the end of it. Any thoughts?

Appreciate all the info. I am in Soldotna, Alaska. Working on repair options now. Thanks all.

2011 Allegro Open Road RED. I can see that the leak is at or around the pump (in the basement compartment next to the propane tank). Have talked to Tiffin. It is the hydraulic system. My coach has both hydraulic jacks and two hydraulic slides. (Why just two of four slides? I don't know.) The reservoir is behind the pump so you can't even see it, and is impossible to fill without a long flexible hose funnel! I am trying to find a repair, but in case I can't here in Soldotna, any experience at how bad a leak has to be before failure (i.e., jacks or slides fail to operate) would be helpful. Thanks.

After setting up in Soldotna, AK this afternoon, I noticed an oil spot under the basement compartment where the propane tank is. Upon inspection, I found the spot was coming from an apparatus (equipment, hoses, etc.) in the same compartment, but next to the propane tank. Looks more like hydraulic fluid of some sort. Trying to get a mobile tech to look at it now. Anyone have any idea what the function of this apparatus is?

Refer to above postings for background. i have the harness "fix" installed, but have not needed to use it ( switch has never been turned on or fuse inserted). After towing five days without unhooking or starting my 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk, the battery was totally dead when I stopped this afternoon. Any one else having a battery discharge issue when towing the new Cherokees, separate from the flat towing issue? P.S.--May have also had that "hot electrical" smell we all dread.
-
For background, see my earlier posts preceding. I was fortunately able to get the harness installed on my 2016 Trailhawk before leaving Orlando May 8 on our six month trip to Alaska. Bad news, my dealer required that I pay for the harness and installation. Good news, I was very quickly reimbursed by FCA Jeep. I have towed my Cherokee a few thousand miles without using the fix/harness with no issue. Because of the battery discharge problem, I do not plan on using the harness unless I have to. I agree with RTRDCHF's sentiment above--poorly designed and poorly implemented solution to an unimaginable design flaw in an auto supposedly made--and for sure marketed as--a natural for flat towing. I hope my unit is one of those that will never have the flat tow issue because I'm not sure how much tolerance I will have for jumping through the hoops that using the harness requires. Otherwise, I'll probably be a short-lived Jeep owner--my first and LAST!

The above postings may have diagnosed my problem. I have no 12v system power; i.e., coach lights, A/C thermostats, etc.--on both shore power and generator--unless I hold the entry door electrical panel 12V disconnect switch down. If I hold the switch down, then the 12V system functions normally--I have lights, I can operate the A/C thermostat, etc. Does this sound like the solenoid?

A visit to my local Jeep dealership today to get the harness installed answered the question I asked above--and confirmed my worst fears. What a jerry-rigged, chincy, crappy "fix" Jeep has come up with. The User Guide has six steps to activate the system, and five to deactivate--with many cautions, alerts and warnings for the process. The technician suggested I not use the center console storage compartment because that's where the activation switch is located, and accidentally turning it on when not in tow mode can "do bad things". The coup de grace is a statement that says: "It is highly recommended that a battery charger/maintainer is used while the vehicle is in tow mode to prevent complete battery drain for system activation longer than three hours." Oh, no problem Jeep, who would ever tow more than three hours at a time! No advice or counsel from Jeep on how to accomplish this little recommendation. Oh well, no worry. After all, I've got five days before I leave for Alaska (after already delaying departure waiting on this "fix")!

Rather mundane question, but what has the Forum found to be the most convenient and economical means of buying DEF, and getting it into the DEF tank. My DEF tank is on the rear passenger side which makes filling at the diesel fuel pump a two step process. (Those truckers don't always take that well. ?)
