Colorado Campgrounds

Question

We are planning a trip to Colorado in the near future to get away from the TX heat! Any suggestions/info on campgrounds appreciated.

Found one online just out of Pagosa Springs (Wolf Creek Run) that looks good, but have found that they can make anything look good online.

Has anyone stayed there? Thanks, Milha Skelton

Milha,

Welcome to the FMCA Forum.

The nearest "escape the heat in Texas" destination we have found is Angel Fire, NM. We spent last August there and did not turn on the A/C a single time.

With an elevation of over 8,000 feet, the climate is GREAT. I just looked on the weather site I use and the high the next three days is 76 degrees F.

Brett

CO is a big State. Do you have any more direction available as to what part of CO you might want to visit? What cool? Be sure to visit Cripple Creek or Blackhawk (10,000 & 8,500 feet).

We haven't stayed at Wolf Creek Run but have traveled US 160 across southern Colorado and can tell you that if you get to the area and Wolf Creek Run doesn't suit you, you will find no shortage of campgrounds. This high valley area is a summer retreat for many hundreds of RV'ers. In fact if you get to Alamosa, you will be near the headwaters of the Rio Grande River. Elevations along US 160 in the area are between 7000 and 9000 feet above sea level and you will generally find mild temperatures. There are many RV parks in a variety of settings, something like the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

We are currently in Denver where the daytime temperatures are in the mid 80's to low 90's. This summer it has been fairly wet here. We are getting some afternoon showers, a few thundershowers, but not really heavy rains for the most part. Evenings the temperature is dropping into the low 70's or 60's. So this might be a good destination if you would like some big city camping. We're staying at a park in Golden, CO at rates of about $30 per night depending on your electric, water and sewer connections. We have all with 50A electric.

Thanks for the suggestion, we went to Angel Fire in the summer many years ago, and the weather was great. Will certainly look into that. Any campground suggestions? Milha

Milha,

We stayed at Monte Verde RV Park. A small, quiet, family owned park. You can look north from the park and see Mt Wheeler at 13,161 ft.

If you are looking for a park with all the bells and whistles, this isn't the one. But we enjoyed the quiet, the hiking trails in the area and Taos is just over 24 miles to the west.
