Stiff Steering ?

Hello all, My first post and I finally make it to a Class A from a Scotty ,, LOL

Anyways, I bought a 1993 Damon Frontier Flyer and on the way back to Memphis I noticed that every time I stopped and started back on the road again the steering would be stiff until I got up to speed then it was like it broke free and was normal steering ??? Anyone Got fix ??

Please let us know what chassis you have.

Have you checked power steering fluid level?

Have you checked power steering belt for condition and tightness?

Hi Rusty, This question sent me into the archives.

If you have a Ford Chassis. These are the some of the things to check.

I will leave out the Tire issues for now.

As mentioned by Brett check the power steering fluid level.

Loose or damaged hoses connections.

Leakage between reservoir and housing.

Leakage at pump shaft seal area.

Steering

Misaligned flexible coupling ( if so equipped) to gear interface.

Steering column alignment.

Steering linkage or front axle spindle pins for a binding condition or lack of lubrication.

Bind in the front axle spindle thrust bearing.

Steering gear adjustment.

Power Steering Belt.

Power Steering pump pressure and flow below specs.

Air in the system.

Contaminated fluid, incorrect fluid.

Bad steering line,bent or kinked tubing.

Steering gear valve binding or gear out of adjustment.(Integral Power Steering)

Excessive internal gear leakage.

As Brett asked What is the Make of Coach, What chassis do you have? Solid or independent front end?

Do you mean, (1)I stopped and killed the engine or (2) I stopped at a light and started driving again?

There can be many different solutions to either one. If it is number 1 I would tend to believe it is in your Power Steering Pump.

This may be a stupid question, but have you checked to see if your power steering belt is there? You can drive without the pump working but it would really be Stiff. But when you get moving it becomes easier to steer.

If you had bad hoses or leaking pump you would see fluid all over the engine compartment. If it was a loose belt you would hear it squealing every time you turned the steering wheel.
