New York Finger Lakes

Planning trip to New York Finger Lakes in June 2013. Plan on sight seeing, wine tasteing, and ending up in Syracuse NY for Good Sam Rally. We will be traveling from southern VA via I-81 with toad and pets. Any suggestions on what to see along way and general area, as well as what to avoid or be aware of. We usually aim for 300-400 miles max per day with stops. I thought we would spend the week before Rally enjoying the trip and attractions. Thanks for any help.

Paul and Carol, Make a list of what you like, hobbies, scenery, food, cheeses, Museum's, Quilt Shops and any others you can come up with and we will see if we can fill up your bucket.

You will have to get off 81 in NY to see the NY Wine Trails.

You might want to consider heading west on Rte. 86 (NYS Rte. 17) in Binghamton toward Elmira. The link should give you all the info you need to see several Wine Trails in the Finger Lakes. Head north from Rte. 86 on any of several routes will put you into NY wine country. If you continue up Rte. 81, you would have to head west, possible on the NYS Thruway (Rte. 90) to get to the Finger Lakes. This would take you through Syracuse, but before the Rally.

Four trails in particular are in the Finger Lakes: Keuka Trail, Cayuga Trail, Canandaigua Trail and Seneca Trail.

Perhaps we'll see you at The Rally as we will be arriving on Thursday.

Just north of Bath, NY you want to go up route 54 to Hammondsport and stop at the http://www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org/. That have fantastic old motorcycle, aircraft, and automobile exhibits. Really neat museum.

You also want to do the Corning Museum of Glass, http://www.cmog.org/, in Corning, NY,

And in Big Flats, NY there is the http://www.soaringmuseum.org/ and the http://www.wingsofeagles.com/.

And if you are into old classic wooden boats, you need to make a trip north to Clayton, NY and visit the Antique Boat Museum, http://www.abm.org/ . Gorgeous old wooden boats , some in service and other being restored in drydock. You have to see the "Pardon Me" with its Packard 4M2500 engine, You can see many of their boats on their Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/antiqueboatmuseum . But they look so much better in real life!!!

And if you are a Marine or military guy, there is the http://www.cutco.com/company/visitorsCenter.jsp , which houses the KA-BAR Knife museum, in Olean, NY.

And while we are talking knives, there is the http://www.zippo.com/about/article.aspx?id=1584 , the Zippo lighter and Case knife museum in Bradford, Pa.

I forgot Walkins Glenn State Park - http://nysparks.com/parks/142 , The walk up, or down, the gorge is fantastic and beyond description with words. One could call it nature at its very best. A very spiritual place.
