  1. Even though this is an old thread thought I'd jump in and ask a question. We just bought a 2008 Newmar Mountain Aire. The people we bought it from had an egg crate shell on top of the mattress. We removed the egg crate shell and the mattress feels pretty good. We haven't slept on it yet. We have a temperpedic that we have had for 3-4 years and love it. Wondering what kind of reputation the Newmar mattress has - the mattress says right on it that it was manufactured for Newmar. Thanks. David

    I can't tell you anything about the Newmar mattress but when we sold our home in 2011, we removed the mattress from our coach and replaced it with the Tempurpedic we already had.


  2. You won't be able to just register the motorhome in Texas without having a domicile there. That would involve having an address in the state, changing driver license to Texas, registering any toad there, etc.

    We have lived in Texas all our lives so when we sold our home in 2011, we used Escapees RV Club in Livingston, Texas for our mail forwarding. We changed our driver license, all vehicle registrations and voter registration to the Escapees address.

    I know the states you mentioned do not have state income tax but you might want to check on personal property taxes and vehicle registration fees. Polk County (where Escapees is located) does not have personal property taxes but some Texas counties do. Registration is based on weight rather than value as some states use. Ours for this year was a little over $200. Then you have to have an inspection within 90 days of registration renewal which will be less than $20.

    This is just to give you an idea of what will be involved in registering the motorhome in Texas.

  3. I replaced Goodyear on my coach in 2012 with Toyo. We traveled that year from Lampasas, Texas to Alaska and back. Last year to northern New Mexico, Phoenix, AZ for the winter then back to Texas. This year we are currently in North Carolina having traveled 4700 miles since leaving Texas in May.

    Overall we have put nearly 20,000 miles on the Toyos without a problem. I don't have a problem with the ride or noise as I did with the Goodyear tires.

    I have been told that the Michelin would have a better ride but at the time I bought mine, the Michelins were about $1200 more even with the FMCA program.


  4. What tow bar do you have?

    I use a Roadmaster Falcon 2 that has served us well but we went with new base plates. Got the tow bar on Ebay much cheaper than Camping World or other RV suppliers although you might check PPL in Houston, Texas. Our towbar purchase included all the necessary wiring, diodes, safety cables and electrical cable from the motorhome to the Jeep.

    Your Jeep owners manual should give details to set up for dingy towing. Mine is

    1. Transfer case in neutral.

    2. Transmission (automatic) in Park.

    3. Key in ignition and on to the first stop (so the steering wheel does not lock).

    You will also need an auxiliary braking system for the Jeep when being towed - required in most states. I have the Brake Buddy Vantage but there are many excellent systems out there.


  5. Ours saved us in Alaska in 2012. When we plugged in, everything was fine. Sometime 2 days later, we lost power and I started checking everything out. No lights on the Surge Guard. Ran my extension to another pedestal that was in use by another coach and still no power. At that point, it appeared something had happened to my Surge Guard. Went back to the original pedestal to check things out - one knee on the ground (damp) I put my arm on top of the power pedestal and received a nice shock. Campground moved us to a new site and I had to bypass the Surge Guard for a while but I am sure it saved a lot of electronic equipment.

    As soon as I could get a replacement was a week - I was really nervous until I got it installed.

    We replaced our No-cold with a Samsung RF20HFENBBC French Door model from Home Depot. The one we got was black but I think it is available in white and stainless. 33" wide 19.4 cu ft. Had it installed in June 2015 and we love it. Solid ice cream and never run out of ice. Sandra loves the additional space in the freezer and refer.

    When we travel, I just turn on the inverter and when we arrive, freezer is still -2 and refer is still 38. Our inverter is a MSW also. I don't' remember for sure but I think the book says 2 or 2.5 amps for this refrigerator.


  7. Welcome to the FMCA forum.

    You will get many differing opinions about driving your rig to Alaska. First, I would not try the Dalton in a motorhome. The BLM recommends 2 full size mounted spare tires for anyone on this road. There is no cell or Internet service along the road. It is primarily a trucking road and may have potholes and washboard.

    We made the trip to Alaska in 2012 and had zero problems and no damage. We went with a caravan. We have 2 different couples that are friends of ours just starting to return from Alaska. One couple went with. caravan and one went on their own. Neither has had a problem or damage.

    The main thing to do if you travel to Alaska is to slow down. The frost heaves on the roads and some roads under construction can be extremely rough and will cause damage. We found a road under construction in Montana to be just as rough.
    If you are not mechanically inclined, you might want to consider traveling with a group. For retired or active military, SMART has a caravan.

    No one can really make the decision but just do what is comfortable for you.


  8. Indiana EZ Pass instructions I received said to use those for trucks, buses, etc for my motorhome - 1 to 2 inches from the bottom of the windshield centered or just to the right of center if it is a divided windshield. Has worked well so far through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylviania, New York


  9. We spent last summer at Deer Spring RV Park in Mayhill, NM. Nice cool weather in the mountains. Many of the people there spend every summer there but they welcome newcomers as old friends. Someone has a campfire going every evening and everbody brings their chairs. This summer we are traveling but plan to be back in Mayhill next June then on to South Fork, Colorado or Chama, New Mexico for trout fishing until sometime in September. Our experience has been that most campgrounds in Colorado has some spontaneous campfire gatherings where all are welcome.


  10. I have the Garmin RV 760 LMT. We left central Texas the end of May and are in Indiana now with many stops along the way. My Garmin has guided me faithfully to every campground location except the current one - the problem was caused by an error in a campground database from the POI Factory.

    When I selected the same campground from the Passport America database, it was right on.

    Today it successfully got us into and out of downtown Chicago (in the toad of course) without any problems.

    But I still look at a map and compare it to the route on the GPS.


  11. My brother-in-law is interested in a gas pusher. He and his wife do not like the "hump" in a front engine gas model. I know that gas pushers have been produced by several manufacturers over the years but I really do not know anything about them.

    Anyone out there familiar with gas pushers or have recommendations?


  12. Looked at the Rand McNally and the Garmin RV 760LMT. After reading various reviews, we decided on the Garmin - we love it so far. Our experience has been limited to use in our toad but will be using it next week in the motorhome. I have the DeLorme Street program on my computer and a trip we are planning took us across a bridge in New Hampshire which is around 12'6" according to a low clearance file I have added. Our motorhome is 13'1'.

    I entered the same route into the Garmin after entering the motorhome data - it routed us around the low clearance. The Good Sam trip routing service will show a route into the Niagara Falls area on a freeway which does not allow RVs although they do flag it as RVs prohibited and tell you that you need to change your route. The Garmin will route you around that freeway.

    Also note that you can select Auto or RV mode on the Garmin.


  13. The rates all depend on what you want - woodshop, silversmithing, ceramics, etc. We are at Happy Days RV Park in Apache Junction (east valley). All they have is a pool, shuffleboard, billiards and potlucks but that is all we wanted - we came here to visit family and see Arizona. There are many resorts here offering various amenities and many price levels - just depends on what you want to pay for. Palm Creek in Casa Grande is very nice but rates vary according to month - January and February >$1000.


  14. I had Progressive for a year but dropped it at renewal time due to an outrageous price increase with no claims. When I cancelled my auto coverage which was due in 2 months, I received a phone call telling me someone had made mistake and asking me to reconsider. I had already replaced them with National General through Good Sam for less money than I had been paying Progressive and my auto policy is for one year instead of 6 months.

    Welcome to the FMCA forum.

    First note that the FMCAssist program is not a roadside assistance program. It is an emergency evacuation/vehicle return program and is an included benefit.

    The FMCA Road Assist program is an additional cost option. I have the Good Sam Roadside Assistance program but have never had to use it so I can't really comment on the quality of service. I had Coach-Net prior to that but never had to use it.

    There have been many discussions on this forum about the pros and cons of various assistance programs and a lot seems to depend on where you are when you need service and the representative you happen to get on the phone.

    Maybe someone with experience with the service of various programs will jump in here.

    On the subject of insurance:

    I had Progressive insurance but dropped them because of an outrageous price increase with no claims. I have talked to others who had the same problem with them. I now have National General through Good Sam. I ended up with better coverage for less money than Progressive. Again, there are many good companies out there - you just have to shop around and get what fits you.

    You can do a search on this forum for insurance and for roadside assistance to find several discussions.
