Curious as to what folks in states like MN, WI, ND do when preparing their homes to leave for the winter months. Do you shut off water to house? Hire a service to remove snow, etc. What other precautions do you take? TIA. Doc Mike

Thanks for the great info. We've reserved two weeks at Topsail and one at Grafton in January, and then we'll stay in a commercial camp ground for February. Trying to make this winter more pleasant than snow and cold in WI. Doc MIke

We have decided to buy an Acme Tow Dolly, but in reading the owner's manual for our 2014 Honda Accord, I notice that it states the car CANNOT be towed. I find this confusing, as I've seen other late model, and 2014 Accords being towed via tow dolly. I can't think of a reason not to tow with the dolly. Any wisdom out there to share? I'm not going to buy another car, this one is too new and we really enjoy it. Looking for some feedback, please.

Premier Car Tow Dolly RV Trailer
mapleskoff replied to pacurran's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
We'll be picking up an Acme Tow Dolly in the next two weeks at the manufacturer in NC. It has surge type disc brakes, tongue weight of about 50 lbs, and weighs not much over 300. Will stand it on end in our home garage if need be. Towing a '14v Honda Accord. Used to tow '09 Honda CR-V four down with Roadmaster gear. Investigated other dolly mfgs. and this seemed to be best value for $$$$ spent. At $1500, also get spare wheel and tire. Put a hitch on the car to pick it up, and to use to move dolly when not enough room to store it with MH at campground. Would encourage anyone interested in Google their web site and talk with Jarad at Acme. We visited them last month (no hitch then) and were impressed with the small operation, friendly staff, pricing and the five year guarantee. I haven't any financial interest in the company, just think it a good buy and am looking forward to getting ours. Doc Mike Neenah, WI -
Thanks all for the responses. As former Phoenicians, we are somewhat aware of the temps in TX, though weren't motor home owners when we lived in AZ. Also recall October being a very pleasant time of year in the Valley of the Sun. Don't regret following one of our kids to SC and now to WI (our others are in the Seattle area; been there, done that), but having grown up in the winters of lake effect snow in NE Ohio, we want to remove ourselves from the worst of winter if we can. At least by storing the MH TX from October through our February arrival, we'll not have to waste the $$$$ on winterizing it, and we have an excuse to get out of town and follow the changing leaves south. We'll just spend the $$$ on fuel and campgrounds, LOL. Be well all, and enjoy the coming pleasant weather.....it must be spring someplace! Doc Mike

Many thanks. I'm moving the old Class C out of Wisconsin early, so as not to get snowed in during January and February. Not been so far south in TX, but looking forward to it this next winter. Appreciate your prompt response. Happy holiday! Doc MIke

Taking a trip to South Padre Island next October and leaving rig in the area for winter. Returning in February for a month, or so. Rig will be stored. Do I need to winterize it? Never have spent colder fall/winter in South TX, so haven't any experience. Do winterize at my home area in WI. Any help is appreciated. Doc Mike

I'm putting the hitch receiver on the car to tow it from Manufacturer in NC to our home in WI. Beyond that, I want it to tow the dolly in a campground to another spot to store it if the space not available at camp site. The hitch install is less $$$ than having the dolly shipped. We also visit with friends near by in SC. The folks at Acme (think Roadrunner and Wiley Coyote, and have a chuckle) have been super to deal with. No, i don't have any financial interest in the company. You can Google rthem and visit their very comprehensive, informative, web site. Hope this answers the question. Doc Mike

We had towed our '09 CRV four wheel down. Now we have a Honda Accord and can only tow it on a dolly. We are getting our from Acme Tow Dolly Co., in NC. We are also purchasing a spare wheel w/tire. Tongue weight is 50 ponds and can stand it up in our garage or in a campground. Good reviews and dealing with this small company has been excellent. BTW, the dolly comes w/a five year warranty, disc brakes, and an additional five years may be added at time of purchase. We are even going to pick it up at he factory as soon as I have a hitch receiver put on the car, saving considerable shipping cost. Hope this info helps others. Doc Mike

CG Recommendation Central or West Coast of Florida
mapleskoff replied to mapleskoff's topic in Campgrounds
Thanks for all of the good suggestions. Having been stationed on a Navy Tanker out of Mayport many years ago, I am somewhat familiar with the state, as well as the mosquitoes! My lovely wife has family north of Orlando, so will spend some time there. Would like to be near the gulf coast the rest of the time, but my only MUST is that the place be clean, secure, and comfortable. Looking forward to a warmer winter than we had this recent one. I tow a 2009 Honda CRV without any difficulty. Car's auto transmission no problems. Leave key in Acces. position and trans in neutral, emergency brake OFF. I follow HOnda Owner's Manual directions, though I DO NOT remove fuse. If towing all day I'll start car when we stop for lunch. Have only had drain on battery enough to jump start on two occasions and then not a problem to jump start as always carry cables or other device. Tow w/a Class C Itasca, Ford F450 engine. Have to downshift when on mountain upgrades, but seldom get below 50 MPH (Continental Divide in CO was a bit of a slow go, but not much of a challenge). Seems only lose about one MPG when towing. Hope this info helps. Doc Mike

Just moved north and don't wish to spend next winter in WI. Looking for camping recommendations for Class C rig for February and March in central or west coast of FL. Thanks in advance. Doc Mike
