  1. Parasitic current draw. Even with the disconnect switch in the off position there is still parasitic draw. Leaving the step switch in the ON position is a big draw.

Yes, need to know year, make, model, etc. like put it in your signature line.

p.s, I spent the first 19 years of my life in North Brookfield, but it was an accident of birth!

  2. Joe, good point. Yes, the mortgage was paid off.  Had a car payment with 0% and the Motorhome financed. Other than that we were debt free.  Medicare cost me more once I retired than my military Tri Care For Life.  Medicate has gone up every year but it is still cheap compared to some insurance plans. Taxes are a big hunk of change each year, local and federal.

With everything considered, we plan on about $2500 a month (Max for us) overall for traveling.  We are not full time, just get out of Texas for the Summer to beat the heat. We slowed down to longer stays at CG's which allows for the retirement pay to catch up each month.  Consider going from point A, to B, to C, to D, in 4 to 6 days at 100 gallons of fuel each day versus staying a week at each place and tallowing the deposits to catch up.

My questions for the "retirees" are:

    • (1) How did you know when it was time to retire?
    • (2) Did you develop a plan for how to spend your time in retirement or just "go for it"?
    • (3) How long before retirement did you start thinking /planning your retirement before making the decision to retire?

    (1) First, I retired twice. Once from the military (USMC), and second from NASA JSC.  I didn't know. In the Military there were some underlying medical condition and wife and I talked it over and said it was time. For NASA I was approaching the maximum needed, 65 + 8 months and decided not to wait for the 8 months. Talked to SSecurity and found out that I would loose $25 a month by retiring before maximum age. A no brainer and went for it.  DW on the otherhand wanted to work until she was 72 but then we were involved with things and she decided it just was ot worth staying the extra 7 years and retired 7 months after me.  Neither of us have ever regreted it.

    (2) No plan. At the time I was riding a motorcycle. A 2004 I bought in 2004 and in 2007 had 64,000 miles on it. Yes, I rode. An accident I had and survived was a main reason for DW to retire. Life is short...and then some idiot can make it shorter. In 2007 we purchased a 5th wheel and 1 year later the motorhome. Never looked back. We travel out of Texas for the summer months and several times throughout the year for 1 or 2 week trips.

    (3) Never gave it much thought, just went for it.  You are on the right track. One of the main considerations I had in retiring was, was I having fun anymore.  Things change in the military world and corporate world. When it doesn't become fun anymore it's time to bite the bullet and give it up.  If you really like what you are doing, having fun, enjoy what you do, then maybe the time is not right now.

It's a big step and only you can decide when, and for what reasons. Just remember, life can be short.

You're living on the edge, don't know if my black tank is big enough or there's enough toilet paper on board for that group!😀

Fortunately we preached and preached what could go down the toilet. Never did have a problem.  You notice that me and DW stayed at DIL's house...no way was I going to stay with that gaggle!

  5. Well grand-kids are always welcome. Was at Del Mar Beach, CA. Granddaughters wanted to spend the night with friends on the beach. Sure, your mom and friends can stay in the MH...we are staying in Mom and Dad's house.  DIL (Mom) and 7 girls stayed in the MH. There are exceptions, but I'm not going to be included. 🙂

I think Dish wifi depends on a phone line for upload.

Ray, I don't know of dish providing an up-llink using only a receiver. There has to be a transmitter and most will only have a cell phone. that leaves a question of "blind" spots. Also, setting up the RV has to have access to an open path to the transponder.

WIth this statement from their web page, "Without a physical SIM card, the Journey1 will prioritize to the best available cellular network, find service, and optimize. When the user moves locations, the hotspot finds new service and optimizes their connection again."

Means that a hotspot has to be used. It is going to be very dependent on the locations of the hotspots as to the availability of a link.

I'd definitely pass on this one until proven to work to satisfaction.

The plans are still expensive. I'll stick to my AT&t unlimited hotspot. Heck of a lot less of $$.

Yes Sir and I think that your location, Texas City is pretty close to Houston too, so it would be awesome to meet you guys sometime in the near future.

Sorry for the late reply.  We are 40 miles or so South of Houston.  I'll buy the first glass of water when you come down. Diet water is on you.

  8. Bob and Paula, So nice to meet you. Any friend of D & L are a friend to us.
I always say the FMCA paid for the return of their RV, and it's true. Had you not been available they would have found some driver but having you do it with the pups and all was a God send.

Thanks, and if you are every down around the Galveston, TX area, be sure to PM or Email me.

p.s., Thelma and Louise say woof!

Say hi to the Dr and Mr's Dr. Don't forget to sit down for a session with her.

    See, I do know D & L

Correct, but the price between dealers in the program for the mounting/balancing/etc. varies… was just looking to see what people were paying.

I pulled the trigger and purchased the tires under the program. Will have them installed within the next month before our next outing.  Lowest price in the Houston area that I’ve found is around $400 for all things included (mounting, balancing, etc.).

Who did you use, for others in the area?

  10. In the past I used quality dryer sheets.  Wet the area, wipe with dryer sheet and immediately wash and rinse.

Now-a-days i spray it with Awsome or Simple Green, let it sit (water is your friend) the wash it off. Some of the bugs need to be scrubbed a little but do not put much pressure when doing it or you will tear the protective screen, if there is one, or scratch the paint.  If stubbor, repeat the process of soaking them again repeating the process.

For the back, yep it sure does get dirty, I use Wash-Wax-All with microfiber clothes to get any area I can reach. Wipe on, wipe off. For the upper portion of the back I use the Wash-Wax-All extensionrod with there microfiber fitted cloth.
