0 hermanmullins Report post Posted June 27, 2017 John, You can take US 87 north out of Amarillo to Claton and US 64/87 to Raton. Then south on US 64 to Eagles Nest and Angel Fire. Road is curvie an a few climbs but a the drive is beautiful. Another route would be I-40 to Clines Corner and 285 north to Santa Fe. Then 68 to Taos then 64 to Angel Fire. Santa Fe has lots of history and Taos is also nice. Through Raton you have the NRA Range and the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron. You & Jill and the kids have a great trip. 0 wolfe10 Report post Posted June 27, 2017 OK, the two routes that are a no go: 434 north from Mora is narrow, steep and under construction. 120 east from Ocate has an gravel section through the mountains. So your choices are (a little longer, but better roads) through Raton. Or a little shorter/roads OK, but not as good) through Springer and then 58 west. Have done both the latter two many times in our motorhome-- kind of a toss up. Either is just fine for any size RV.
0 obedb Report post Posted June 28, 2017 Herman/ I know a little bit of a shortcut to Clayton from Amarillo that I used for years on my way from Jacksonville, Texas to Raton and on to Alamosa, but your way is just fine and less difficult to describe. You are right on.
