Best roads: Flagstaff to Page, then Kanab then to I-15

Question

I am looking for info on Hiway 89 out of Flagstaff to Page, then Kanab then to I-15. I have a 40ft Phaeton with a tow. How is the road and is it usable with my coach? Thanks for any and all assistance

When? What time of the year? I don't see why not.

docktorbk.  Welcome to the Forum!

With or without chains, it's a good road for any size coach!  We where on part of it last summer, before heading over I-70 on our way to Gillette, WY.  Mine is 45'+ and Toad.

I am planning on taking 89 from Flagstaff to I-15 in July. Haven't been on the section from Flagstaff to Page before, but, I have been from Page to 1-15.  It's a good road, and very few towns.  We plan to cross over to 15 on Utah 20. It is a truck route, so, if they can make it, I know I can.  I've been on it in a car before and the pass is a bit steep but you get more interstate driving. than if you took 89 all the way up to I-70.  Utah 20 is also an easier road to drive in a large RV than Utah 14. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LEAVE 89 AND GO TO I-15 THROUGH ZION NATIONAL PARK ON UTAH 9 (ZION PARKWAY).  You have to go through a tunnel and need an escort which has to be arranged in advance and there is a fee for this service.  They need to close the tunnel to other traffic when you go through. I've never done it and I don't think its worth the hassle to try it.

All good road from Flagstaff to Kanab.  Stay on US-89.  US-89A has a steep climb to Jacobs Lake and then a steep drop down to Fredonia.  From Fredonia to I-15 on SR-389 and SR-59 is all good 2 lane road.

US-89A is a good road, just pretty steep.  No problem for the Phaeton, as long as you have mountain driving experience.

If you did take US-89A you can spend a couple of nights in Jacobs Lake at the National Forest CG or at the RV park there and drive your Toad to the North Rim.

As a trucker, I ran US89 a number of times, and I always stayed on 89 until joining I-70 westbound  to I-15. You can avoid Salt Lake by heading north thru Vernal Utah and on to Rock Springs on US 191. If anyone is interested, I can lay the route out for you.
