Replacing An Inverter With A Converter

Recommended Posts

I have a Heart Freedom 20 (2000 watt) inverter in my 1995 Safari Serengeti motorhome.

It was more trouble than it was worth and I left it off mostly all the time.

Several years ago it quit inverting but still functioned as a converter until recently when that failed also.

I don't really want to replace it with another inverter.

Can I have it replaced with a converter?

janchuckscw,

Welcome to the FMCA Forum.

Absolutely. As long as you don't need/want the inverter function (12 VDC to 120 VAC) you can replace it with a converter or battery charger.

I would strongly recommend a "smart" charger or converter for both faster charging and longer battery life.

You will have to do some minor 120 VAC rewiring, connecting inverter 120 VAC IN to 120 VAC OUT at the inverter, as well as wiring the new converter or charger to 120 VAC.

I used a 100 amp Powermax RV converter which I ordered off of ebay.

Fully automatic, it has worked flawlessly for over a year.

Sure, you can buy a good converter for like $150.

They are pretty easy to mount and wire up, but will have to rewire the 120V wires that flow thru the present inverter if you want to remove it or just leave it in place as a flow through system as it is now.
