Suggestions for RV parks near Salt Lake City, UT
smokeater75 replied to lollypoppy14's topic in Campgrounds
Good Morning LollyPoppy14, I stop at the KOA in Salt Lake City every year on my way back home, its an old park but well maintained. There is a shuttle van that picks you up right at the front office and takes you to Temple square and drops you off. This puts you right in the heart of down town where there is alot to see. The shuttle comes and goes all day long so you can get a ride back. If you don't want the shuttle there are different tours some that last all day, that will take you to the various attractions. You can also step right on to the Trax rail that is right in front of the office and it will take down town or the airport. I would definitely consider the KOA for a stay. Good luck Smokeater75. -
Just out of curiousity, how well do these sensors work when its -30, If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks, Smokeater75

Michelin XRV 305/70R 22.5 to XZA2 295/80R 22.5
smokeater75 replied to RDavidPhillips's topic in Tires
You may find that the 295's are also more expensive than either the 305's or 315's . Good luck. Smokeater75 -
Happy New Year to everyone, just thought I'd let you know that we have broken a 100 yr. old record for cold in the month of Dec. our average temp. never got warmer than -21, we have been in a cold snap for the last 3wks where our day time temps are -38 to -50, I was out at our motorhome checking things out and had to use a screw driver to break up the -50 anti-freeze in the toilet. I'm glad that we are leaving soon for Palm Springs, hope everyone had a pleasant holiday. Smokeater75 in Sunny Winnipeg.

This may help, go on u-tube and check out Source Engineering, they show a tank they have developed for Monaco motorhomes. The tank is made out of Aluminium and has a site window in it. Hope this helps, smokeater75

Thanks to everyone who replied, I guess I should have mentioned this back in April. Cummins Rocky Mountain in Salt Lake City put in a new starter, and here we are 5000 miles later and everything seems to be fine. Thanks again. Smokeater75.

There is a really good video by RV geeks on U-tube, you may want to have a look at it. The video is on a Newmar but it will give you a pretty good idea of what has to be done and how to do it. Hope this helps smokeater75

Good morning everyone, its 10:20 am here in Salt lake city. The tow truck driver came yesterday morning and between the two of us and a lot of banging on the starter we got the motorhome started much to both of our relief. I drove over to Rocky Mountain Cummins and they took the RV in and spent two hrs doing a diagnostic and just like two years ago in Sioux city Iowa at a Cummins dealer they could find nothing wrong. The measured voltage drop on the starter cables were as follows 0.77 VDC on the positive cable and 0.94 on the negative cable. The starter cables and batteries are OK. The starter was cranked several times without any problems. The thing that bothers me the most is not the $400.00 dollars it cost but two yrs ago the same thing happened with the same result. It took 22,000 miles and 2yrs with who knows how many starts and stops for it to resurface again. The Cummins people say that they only look at what goes on in the engine bay. They have no idea what the manufacturer's have done between there and the ignition switch on the dash. So here we go again wondering when it will happen again. All part of the adventure I guess, thanks again to everyone who responded. Smokeater75

I didn't say it was cranking, that's the problem there's nothing. All that happens when you turn the key after the wait to start light goes out is the volt meter drops to just below 12 volts and nothing.
-
Hi everyone and thanks for the info. Sorry about the voltage error, the voltage drops to just below 12 volts on the dash volt-meter when I try to start it. Thanks again. Smokeater75
-
Thanks Rich, tried that too, the good news is it didn't happen on the road, we are comfortably in a RV park hooked up, so we were very lucky in that respect. Thanks again for the info.

Thanks Brett, I'm thinking its the starter. Batteries are good, it almost seems like theirs a dead spot on the starter and if it lands there bingo. Thanks again for suggestions. I will post the results after Monday when it gets towed to the shop.

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone out there has had this problem. We are currently in Salt Lake City Utah, I went to start the motorhome yesterday and it wouldn't start. I had the same problem 2yrs ago in Sioux City Iowa, the RV was towed to a cummins dealer and after they backed it into the shop the service tech started it and asked me what the problem was. They checked everything and I mean everything and could find nothing wrong. Here we are two yrs later and bingo the identical problem, you turn the key wait to start light goes out try to start the engine and the volt meter dips to 8 volts and nothing happens. I did and checked everything I could just like last time with the same results. I have brand new batteries, starter and deep cycle, its a pain in you know where. Coach-net is sending a tow truck first thing Monday morning to take the motorhome to a Cummins dealer, anyone had this problem. Thanks Smokeater 75 2003 Monaco Windsor,Cummins 8.8 L .

I also aquire info from there as well as Good Sam, but I have found in my limited experience that over all FMCA seems to be the best for me. There are many resources out there, what are your expectations, I agree with a previous post, if rallys are your thing then join a local chapter and you could be doing something every week-end. Good-luck Smokeater75

Hi Dwaynecheramie, I run by fridge while driving down the road without the inverter, I'm not sure you have to use it just for the fridge. Smokeater75,

2012 Holiday Rambler With Surround Sound Home Theatre DVD?
smokeater75 replied to greybeard101's topic in Type A motorhomes
Hi Greybeard101, we have a 2003 Windsor with a Sony radio and cd player. When we watch a dvd we have surround sound. We have a switch on the dash that says tv/radio, if I play a cd we have surround sound going through the rv. When we are playing a dvd I have to remember to flick the switch to tv and then I have the surround sound for the movie. I agree with the idea of going back to the dealer and having them go over the system with you. Its ashame to pay all that money and not being able to enjoy its full potential. Good luck smokeater75. -
Hi denali, my wife and I have been members of FMCA and Coach-Net since 2009, I find the forums great for a info source, and Brett seems to always have the right answers when I ask him questions. I love the magazine and have every issue saved, I find myself going back and reading them from time to time to get valuable info. We have never been to a FMCA event or even a smaller one. Sooner or later we probably will but thats not the reason we joined. We had never done any type of rving and became rvers in 09, in the 4yrs prior to that I had been reading the forum and talking to rvers to try and get an idea of what we were going to purchase. I am a member because of the members not for any other reason. Hope this helps Smokeater75. :)

Hi there, when my wife and I went to New York in September we stopped at the onan plant in Indiana. We have the same gen-set in our 2003 Monaco Windsor, I was wandering the same thing. I talked to one of the service techs there and he told me that he has seen a lot of units come in over the years with over 17000 hrs. on them. If you maintain it on a regular basis it sounds like it will last a long time. Hope this helps Smokeater75.

I could be wrong but I think that anytime you top up your batteries, you should always use distilled water and you should always charge the batteries. When you are adding that much water I'm betting your batteries have been weakened quite a bit. If it was a minus temperature you would risk the acid strength being low enough that the batteries could freeze. Good luck, smokeater75

Good morning everyone. It's about 8 a.m. here in Winnipeg, the temperature is -30 C [-22F], and the wind chill is -43C [-45F] We are getting ready to head down south. Just for the heck of it I put a gallon of -50 winterizing anti-freeze on my deck last night to see what would happen. Well, this morning when I went to check it I can tell you that it didn't freeze solid ... it became a slushy, so I would have to say it works. It certainly wouldn't have burst any pipes. Have a great day, everyone. We will be joining you shortly. By the way, our motorhome is in a heated garage. Smokeater75

Have you unplugged it and checked to see if power is getting to it. You may also want to check the thermo-coupler that allows it to turn on when the compartment temp. drops below 45 F. Not sure if you have done this already, but I have heard that there pricey. Good luck smokeater75

Hi Greybeard101, If your motorhome is registered in Canada it has to have daytime running lights, its the law. We have a 2003 Monaco Windsor and all it took was a wiring harness from Monaco. The plug in was already marked at the factory, so all it took was plugging it in. All cars and trucks that are registered here have to have them. The only complaint I have is that people ride with just their daytime running lights on early in the morning when its still dark and don't realize that they have no tail lights on. From a safety stand point I think it should be mandatory everywhere. Just my 2 cents smokeater75

Hi gmoreno, my wife and I head down to Indio Ca. in Feb. When we leave Winnipeg its around -25 , I drive down to Lincoln Nebraska approximately 650 mi. I have my generator running and I have to portable furnaces which are infrared heaters that draw about 13 amps each. I have had a couple of trips where the temp was -34 with a wind chill of -48, on those occasions I had both of my gas furnaces running for the first 500 miles. The wind was gusting to 50 mph and I had no trouble with the gas furnaces, they will run in extreme conditions as long as they are properly maintained and installed correctly. Hope this helps and good luck, smokeater75

Hi everyone, I don't know where everyone is mounting there 7710 gps but I have the visor and the anti-glare film on my 7710 and I have used it for over 15000 miles and I love it. I also have a garmin nuvi 660 that my wife uses on her side of the coach and sometimes one is quicker than the other, but with the RV specific features of the Rand 7710 I prefer it. I love the ability to download any upgrades and maps from my lap-top and I have not had any problems with it over the 15000 miles. Just my two cents Smokeater75.

House Batteries Cut-off Solonoid Gets Warm/hot When ''On''
smokeater75 replied to peterdube's topic in Electrical
Hi Peter, I have a 2003 Monaco Windsor and yes it gets hot, I have used two in the last 4yrs. Some people dispense with them and just hard wire the connection, but I figure there has to be a reason why its there so I replaced mine and I carry a spare. Hope this helps smokeater75.
